PROFILE

Born in 1918, Eddie came from a relatively simple background. Living in a small home in the South, Eddie planned to take over the family business for most of his life -- a small drugstore on the corner of who-knows-where, in a town with a two-digit population. However, his interest in film sparked at a young age, and it soon became a near-obsession. He spent nearly every day at the small town cinema, even volunteering most every day cleaning and upkeeping the place to pay for the films he'd see over and over again. He even took on another job in order to create some savings, because he soon began to foster a dream of becoming an actor and being on the big screen, himself. Although shy and nervous, he knew this was a lifelong dream that he felt so passionate about, he wouldn't be able to give it up until he tried. So, with his meager earnings, at the age of 17 he took the journey to Hollywood, all on his own.

Things were tough for quite some time, especially financially.  However, Eddie had the boyish good looks and southern charm that quickly lucked him into getting a real Hollywood agent who believed that he was a diamond in the rough. No real acting experience, lots of passion, and a willingness to do anything to succeed goes a long way. Soon, the jobs started pouring in more and more. Eddie was a natural, on top of having a face that was extremely pleasing to the eye. Young girls at the time started going crazy over him, this extremely cute boy who started appearing in bit parts. It wasn't long before Eddie found his first leading movie role, a film about a young high school couple who elope, in 1936.

He was a sensation. Like I said: a natural. The new up and coming eye candy. And it was soon after that that he got another big movie role, a PSA-type film about a young boy who falls tragically into the dark underbelly of society, drugs, alcohol, and being mean to women, and what not. That was in 1937, and really solidified Eddie's reputation as a serious actor. The people saw he could be a cute, preppy yet dedicated boyfriend in his first film, but his second film showed that he could also show a wide range of emotion, and play a naive kid falling into despair. It was a hit, especially with parents trying to warn their kids against bad behavior. For a while, he went a little quiet, figuring out what to do with his newfound fame. He did some autograph tours, and took some one-on-one classes and lessons, hoping to sharpen his skills even further under some masters. He also began to take classes inn order to practice what would be  needed for his next movie. Then finally, in 1943 at the age of 23, he got his role that touted him as a three-time movie star: a movie musical that involved singing and dancing. Eddie became a triple threat in more ways than one, and the money was seriously starting to roll in, especially as he did a few concerts, and his voice was published on a record for the movie's soundtrack.

For the next small handful of years, he began to work on stage acting. He was interested in Shakespeare, so he began to study him as well. A good amount of his money went to paying for classes. He had had a pretty good education back where he came from, but now, he was always hungry to learn more. He didn't want to disappoint his fans who expected a good show from him, and also was very self-critical with his acting skills, wanting to be the very best that he could be. From 1944-1950, he actually moved to and lived in New York City, almost exclusively doing stage plays there. He figured that the best way to get better at acting was just to keep doing it, so his schedule was pretty constantly full. It was these years in New York that he realized something that he had been too busy the last several years to really sit down and think about: he was gay. He had a few short flings while in New York, but none of them lasted too long, and he worried sometimes that the people interested in him might try to blackmail him in order to access the money he made from his movies. Eddie will always be a bit naive and green, but he wasn't stupid at all. So, he mostly went lonely in these years.

It was in 1952 that he moved back to Hollywood after getting a call that he was going to be in a new movie by an up-and-coming director, George McNeale, who had already taken the film scene by storm with his heart-achingly painful romance films. Now, Eddie was going to make his film comeback playing a heartbroken lover in George's next film, You Left Me In June

When Eddie and George met for the first time to discuss the role, it was pretty much love at first sight. Their conversation was casual, yet both found the other man charming, attractive, and interesting. Their relationship started very soon after filming began. The rest is history- or rather, their story, which you can read under the Library section!

PERSONALITY

Eddie can only be described as a genuinely good guy. He's the type of person who would lay down his jacket so that you dont have to step in a puddle. He has good looks which help, sure -- really good looks, but the thing that makes so many people fall for him so quickly is his gentle kindness and radiance that shines through all of his actions. He's somewhat quiet but very sweet, and tends to make people feel warm inside with his gentle friendliness. However, Eddie's somewhat meek nature comes from slight verbal abuse coming from his father growing up, which in part motivated him to skedaddle from his small town to LA as hastily as he did. That, on top of the fact that he's very quiet and doesn't want people to find out about his sexuality during such a taboo time, Eddie can come off sometimes as being pretty private, which people respect most of the time. Alone with George, however, Eddie is still learning what his true personality is like, with his sexuality in mind as well: because when you have to keep something so important a secret, it's hard for oneself to focus on anything else.

TRIVIA

  • Eddie enjoys eating sweet things whenever he can.
  • Despite the fact that he's accrued a good amount of wealth, he still lives as frugally as he can, and sends a lot of money back home to his mom.
  • He always speaks in a very direct, clear voice.
  • He likes playing main characters who are suffering in some way, which is part of what drew him to Shakespeare. It's a good way for him to vent some frustrations while also staying true to the character.
  • Even though he's been famous for a good handful of years, he still doesn't know how to react when people stop him in the street to talk or ask for an autograph.
  • He doesn't worry much about losing relevance or people not liking him anymore. He acts because he enjoys doing it, so even if he's just doing a bit part or a favor for someone, he'll enjoy himself.
