Sonata

From a messy family background, nonmaj elf Sonata lives with his step-family of majin satyrs. He fits in exactly nowhere in the magic realm and he feels it constantly - but it's a loving home, and he does fine so long as he has a steady dose of medical suppressants. Nonmagical origin aside, Sonata is actually quite talented at doing magic - he receives a scholarship for an esteemed magical boarding school and... can't go. It's atop an arcane hotspot with a massive crystal at its center and even with his medication, if he's unlucky it could straight up kill him from prolonged exposure.  

His heart hurts. It's the first time he's ever felt this conflicted. The academy is everything he's ever dreamed of, but the fine print tells him he shouldn't risk it - and so he doesn't tell his mom. He's tired of being a coward and not taking risks and as the deadline creeps closer, Sonata can't help himself. He's heard of "solutions" for this on the internet - and naive, straightlaced little Sonata gets a sketchy delivery of a pure arcane crystal with weird instructions. He accepts the invitation, and a month later finds himself sitting on his dormroom floor alone, a few days early for orientation, with the crystal and sewing supplies in his hands. He faints halfway through attaching it to his chest.

Sonata wakes up in what might as well be someone else's body, transformed toe to tip into a patchwork satyr and the crystal nowhere to be found, only a deep impression in his chest in the same shape. This wasn't what was advertised at all! Amidst his panic, he realizes he could be in deep shit for this and possibly get expelled, and resolves to keep his sudden development a secret from everyone: the faculty, his roommate, even his mom. Nobody can know.

Of course, Sonata's new roommate Lachlan is only the most curious and inquisitive puppy to ever roam the magic realm. As hard as Sonata tries to keep things under wraps, Lachlan smells something fishy pretty quickly. It doesn't take long for him to discover enough to pressure Sonata into letting the cat out of the bag - and to Sonata's surprise, he doesn't think its a big deal. They're fast friends and after the frankensatyr debacle has passed, ready to face the rest of a weird school career together.

Sonata is softspoken and a fairly private person. He worries a lot about what other people think of him and has faltering confidence in his worth. He's got big dreams, though; just not the guts to chase them - yet.
