About

A royal archivist with an exceptional memory and ability to gather information from people.

Manages the royal library and archives with a mental catalogue of high accuracy.

Personality

Distant and soft-spoken, he avoids asking much of others and does not expect to be remembered. He is self-reliant and very hard on himself. He is also generous and patient, and will go out of his way to help others when he can see a way to do so, but is also very quick to deflect and keep people at arm's length. He is an important person to the knowledge base of the royal family who everyone goes to... but has trouble seeing himself as worthy. He is very self-conscious about making eye contact and performing general tasks in the presence of other people, but will persevere to see that he keeps his word. He physically fatigues easily, yet no one ever really sees him sleep. He is very particular about his workspace and will keep things tidy to get around the contents more easily. He hates his real name and feels that it is unlucky. He prefers being called List for what he does best.

Story Summary

[Grey people] naturally have weak immunity against common human illnesses which makes common ailments life-threatening or fatal. They have since established an old tradition of contracting to various demons as a means to build their constitution and survive such strains to the body, which also grants additional abilities as a result of the contract. This has unfortunately spread as a distorted rumour that all [grey people] are themselves demons or carry the corrupt values which lead them to be ostracised in the wider human society.

Being born with neurological damage, Feliks grew up with various complications which required him to do things differently. He is long-sighted (with nystagmus), cannot speak loudly, experiences chronic pain, and finds tasks requiring fine motor skills, walking, and balance, somewhat challenging. He had a close relationship with his parents whom supported exploring the world that they were barred from.

His childhood was filled with doctors and surgeries to help him walk and reduce the tension in his body but one person that helped him with his condition the most was Marcel, the "quack doctor", whom he continued to work with in spite of Marcel's controversial reputation. As mobility was difficult for him, he could not relate to or play much with children of his age and instead took to reading, meeting new people at his own pace through the pages of the books that he read. Reading was tiring and a long struggle due to his vision, sometimes his parents or Marcel read for him, but Feliks realised that he did not ever have to re-read as he could recall with surprisingly high accuracy from memory.

Unlike people of his race, Feliks' skin is not pigmented and appears 'human', which theoretically gave him a chance to assimilate with humans much more easily, free from the obvious stigma associated with the [grey people]. But alongside seeming like a smaller and 'weaker' human, this unfortunately led him to quickly contract a common human ailment at a much younger age of 17 that became near fatal.

While travelling away from his home country for the first time, he fell seriously ill after being amongst so many humans and had to be hospitalised which was difficult due to his pre-existing conditions and accessibility. As human hospitals did not have effective treatments for people of his race, his condition worsened before he was finally transported home, instilling a fear in List and his parents of travelling. To survive, he made a contract and has been the youngest contractor to date to attempt and survive the process. A few demons fought over the prospect of such a young contractor and a knowledge-scavenging demon succeeded, leaving an envious death-dealing demon to aggressively follow Feliks everywhere. As a condition of his contract, his demon had a peculiar ability to deflect death which instead led to continual deaths of those close to Feliks - his parents in particular and any subsequent guardians.

After recovering, and discovering the turn of events, he was put in a home for invalids (old people, and others that were deemed unable to take care of themselves) even though he was quite capable of thinking and doing everyday things. After cycling through many people dying while he was in their care, he grew increasingly sad, detached and lonely, detesting the name Feliks. He hid away in their library and was eventually found by Marcel, who helped him through emotional rehabilitation.

Since then, he has been determined to not get close to anyone, with the exception of Marcel. Although Marcel had worked with him prior to his contract, he discovered that Marcel was the sole person who did not die no matter how long and close he became due to the nature of Marcel's contract. And so Marcel continued to help with managing his physical pain and social distance, eventually fostering Feliks and becoming a mentor and father figure.

In his time hiding away in the library, he continued to consume books which built up his reputation as a living databank with a broad repertoire of knowledge, a 'List' of information. In the process, he inadvertently befriended and helped many library regulars and the librarian and eventually became known for his exceptional memory. Marcel recommended Feliks to undergo the rites of becoming the codex for his people. Apathetic and numb to even his usual muscle aches and pains, he accepted. He was extensively tattooed and experienced a notable elevation in status. But people grew more distant and it became hard to distinguish those that were genuine and sincere. Out of concern for his growth, Marcel extracted him from this environment and relocated with him to find a place at the Royal Library in a different country as a Royal Archivist.

He has since tended to the royal archives and has developed a close brotherly bond with the young prince. List wanted to look out for the prince who seemed so thoroughly broken even though he had newly relocated and his body struggled with the extreme cold. He occasionally pursues Marcel's (long abandoned) research and runs information gathering trips within the area for personal interest and as required. He has made Celestin's acquaintance, responding to his enquiries for various materials. Much to his surprise, he also meets Celestin's sister, an earnest researcher in the same field who challenges him to question his comfort zone and explore things by experience rather than literature. Character Milestones: - Outburst over Vespera's pushiness / commentary on accessibility of society in general - Meets Edgar and Celestin without knowing who they really are - Edgar weans the death demon off List and makes it a pet - Needing to learn to trust and not feel like a liability/ burden when others extend their support to him
