Anxious, twitchy, obsessive, and reclusive. Sal spends a lot of her time in her own head, drifting along without much thought of others, more focused on her one true love: all things decaying and decomposing. Quiet and reserved in conversation until she gets talking about mushrooms, and then you can't get her to shut up.
History

she was a regular gal and then she got a fucking fungits in her
sal is a professor of mycology who often has to teach intro bio classes and is generally considered a weirdo by the student body, though she has some friends among her colleagues. she regularly goes out mushroom collecting in the woods a few miles outside of town, and while she's out there alone one day she gets infected by a long-dormant species of parasitic fungus. it takes up residence in her body and when she gets back to town, it bursts out of her and attacks people around her to consume them through rapid decomposition. she tries to control it and keep it from hurting people, even locking herself in her apartment for weeks to try to starve it out, but when it starts to eat her piece by piece she loses her nerve and goes out in the world again. its next victim is one of her favorite students. wracked by guilt, sal finally establishes communication with the fungus as it has slowly been learning from inhabiting her body, and embarks on a mission to steer it away from live human prey, and towards the freshest cuts she can get from the local butchers.
...just in time for the local police to decide this latest run of killings is out of their league, and hire an expert. now sal has to juggle keeping the burgeoning intelligence of the fungus within her sated, while also keeping the strange private detective who's taken the case off her tail.

Appearance
Sal is a tall woman who endeavors to make herself as small as possible. She used to keep her dark curly hair cropped short but now that it's grown out she finds she likes it quite a lot. Her curiously pale grey eyes peer out from under a near-permanently furrowed brow. Sal often stands either with her elbows bent 90 degrees, hands dangling limply from the wrists, or with her arms folded over her chest, attempting to keep the roiling ball of anxiety locked in tight.
She's most often seen in identical purple turtleneck sweaters, frequently under a tan suit jacket. She dislikes having her neck exposed, covering it with her hand if unable to hide it under her clothing. Most of the sleeves on her sweaters are frayed from her picking at them to quell her nerves. Her nails are bitten down to stubs most days, occasionally wrapped up in band-aids to try to kick the habit.
