For most of his life, Laurent was known as a darling, charming sweetheart. He was kind, energetic, and generally had a fondness for others, especially those who enjoyed skating as much as he did. After his accident, he's become a far more pessimistic and bitter person, resentful over what happened to him. He's quicker to agitation, less patient, and more harsh than he used to be, making him hard to tolerate and befriend. While he's still the good, charming, and sweet person somewhere in there, his positive qualities are buried and take some work to see for yourself. Truly, he's just using his deep-seated animosity of the world as a way to put walls up around himself, scared of losing more than he's already lost and pushing others away as a result.

At the beginning of his career, Laurent was a shining star. Bright, graceful, and captivating whenever he performed or practiced on the ice. Though there was a learning curve, he was a natural at ice skating from a young age. He fell in love with the sport, devoting any free time he had to skating, studying performances, and perfecting his elegant spirals and jumps. One night practicing in the rink, he caught the attention of a talent scout - though he was too young to be seriously scouted, the scout encouraged him to further hone his skills with lessons. Heart set ablaze at the prospect of a future in ice skating, Laurent pursued lessons and worked hard to get good at everything they had to offer. He began to move into more competitive circles, making a name for himself and dazzling what little audience he had at local competitions. With his charming attitude and graceful movements, he was soon a fan favorite.
As he grew and perfected his skills, he became more daring, trying bigger and more complex routines. He soared to new heights, managing to reach regional competitions. Though these competitions also came with a learning curve, he found himself excelling even on such a grand stage, moving to national competitions yearly and dazzling judges there as well. After his win at nationals, Laurent received an invitation to compete in a skating competition that aired on TV. It was one many of his idols had competed in themselves, so he couldn't possibly reject the offer. He worked tirelessly to train and prepare, feeling ready and excited when the time finally rolled around.
When he arrived, it was nothing like he'd expected. It was better than anything he could've dreamed. And, as expected, it went off without a hitch. His performance captivated the hearts of many, earning him endearing nicknames alluding to his charming personality and graceful routines. While on the program, he also met someone rather special... someone who loved to skate just as much as he did, who's eyes sparkled in the same way when they were doing what they loved on the ice. They really hit it off well, and decided to keep in touch. It turned out they didn't live too far from each other, so they'd often make time to meet up and practice routines. They even started to develop partner routines together, performing risky and beautiful stunts just for the hell of it. Once again, they caught the attention of someone important, who invited them to compete in a national figure skating competition. This marked the start of their performing relationship with each other, as they both enjoyed the competition very much and wanted nothing more than to keep competing.
They performed together for years, entering competitions and shows and gaining notoriety as they did. Everything was going so, so perfectly. Until it wasn't.
It all happened so quickly, and once it was set into motion, it was inevitable. Laurent did his best to steady himself in the air, but there was nothing to be done - his partner had failed in throwing him evenly, and had made the entire motion Laurent prepared for unbalanced. The intention was a throw quadruple salchow jump, but the reality was about three rotations and a sickening crunch on the ice.
Laurent was unable to competitively skate after that. He injured his left leg and his lower back in the fall, and the long recovery put him out of the competitive ice skating circuit. All the promise and talent that he'd had, the future he yearned for, taken from him in just mere moments, all because of one. small. mistake. Laurent stewed on it, he let his anger, frustration, and bitterness consume him. The once happy and joyful star of the rink had become a resentful, callous, and washed up onlooker.
While he no longer has a career waiting for him in figure skating, his skill and experience has lead him to be able to support himself financially - he now works as a judge for figure skating competitions, though his scores trend low across the board. He busies himself in the off season with acting as a secondary coach, giving advice and pointers from behind the walls of the rink as another instructor works hands-on. He doesn't speak of it, but at night after closing, he sneaks into the rink to try and regain what he's lost.
Laurent resides in a world fairly similar to this one. Technology, medicine, and advancement in general are around the same level as they are for us, and though Laurent travels around the world, his home is somewhere to the north, most likely somewhere similar to southern Canada. Snow is plentiful and freezes are common, though they aren't year round. Ice skating is a very popular sport with a strong following, so professional ice and figure skaters often are treated like high profile celebrities and their opinions are highly respected by those who are interested in skating, whether it be as someone who wishes to enter the ice skating world or to just watch.
