PowersReality Shifting ** This power is apparently latent, because it's never shown up until just now, and when she gets back she'll want to swap out at least one class in the future for some training with it
Magical Savant - part of why her family is hosting Ken is that she's suddenly started developing magical powers, such as reading strange scripts and being able to activate magical items without knowing their origin or even their trigger spells; this has meant that eventually she will go live with his family for a couple summers while they put her through magical schooling in Wonder!
ClustersAggressive Seeker of Knowledge +2 Kala enjoys learning, she is not a nerd but very much a scholar, wanting to sit in on lectures without getting bored as long as there's interesting subject matter
SkillsCode Reading +4 virtually any kind of code such as computer programs, on up to cuneiform writing, are hers to master!
Linguist +3 and she's very, very good at sounding out things to understand those written words, somehow able to put them together without ever having heard or seen them
Musical +2 music notes are just code, aren't they? while she's not necessarily a great musician she is definitely good at it, and might make a better composer than musician
KnacksFashionable +1 many of her relatives are in textiles (her mom's the 'boring' one of their family) and they make sure to keep her in good outfits

She had always had dreams of places, far away and exotic, so real she could all but touch them. No - she could touch them. When she would awaken the visions would fade quickly, and only return to them in the depths of her sleep. More recently though, once her family announced they would be hosting a student from nearby... Why? Didn't they have school where he was from? It's not like the actual international exchange student program, she realized, it was just this dude from up nearby?

Oh. She started understanding what this was about. What she'd originally thought when she started reading strange text or speaking 'in tongues' (whatever that meant) was actually... magic? Given that most of her family is high-tech and hardly spiritual let alone magically inclined, it had never even occurred to Kala that it was innate and latent magical prowess. Yet, they knew because those items she'd been 'activating' when she was cleaning house? Those were definitely old magic items.

They did have to have a sit-down chat: her mother's family back in Korea was known to have a shop filled with ancient totems and sculptures, weapons, and books. When a box of those things made their way into Kala's house, she dove into it and spoke a loud all those weird words. She didn't even know Korean, let alone the ancient dialect of magical script in them.

So they'd been in contact with folks at Carramba's magical campus extension, apparently? And, turned out, there was a kid that needed a more mundane education - like she needed magic? That was pretty cool. In another couple years, if things went right, they'd swap over to his place, up in a little town called Wonder.

It was hilarious to both of them that his name added up to hers, but they usually called him Ken, not K.A.L.A. ... they tried, but couldn't convince her siblings to go along with it.

They had enough in common that Kala and Ken hit it off pretty well. They were occasionally awkward, of course, they were barely teenagers and still had shyness and cliques to think about. But they did have Marching Band - and they loved it.

It had been barely two months into the new year, their 9th grade classes established, small friends groups under way. Halloween was coming: and they had made plans. Kala's family provided a lot of materials, and she took to them with ease: she already knew she wanted to be a cowgirl - but it was a further gag that she was a 'Host'.

"No one's gonna get it, Kala," her brother rolled his eyes, "plus they look just like real people, not robots!"

"Well it's from the movie," she stuck her tongue out, and continued making her costume. Westworld was one of her favorite franchises, after all, so she wanted to make a scary robot cowgirl, just like Dolores.

Ken on the other hand let his imagination go wild, when he spotted some netting and a nice long coat that had been packed with the materials in the attic. He'd learned about Nokken in one of his elementary school classes, and decided that he'd use his real violin with it. Maybe people would get it, but they sure would 'get' dancing ... they didn't really have a choice: that's what Nokken did, that's what his violin did. Even Kala's feet jigged and skipped when he was playing for her. It was probably why their Marching Band class was absolutely the best in years!

All the events in town would be going for several days, though because folks needed to be up on Monday, the bulk of trick-or-treating would be done on Friday instead of Sunday this year. That suited most folks, but almost everyone would keep a small amount of candy aside for the 31st anyway, knowing that some folks did love to do it on the 'right' night.
