Morpheus (Morphine)

Morpheus Wiley or just "Morph" is a Medical student at Schuyler with a focus on remedial quirk based pharmaceuticals. He has a history of shady practices, but his heart has always been in the right place.

He's easily pushed around, but very loud and erratic.

Hero Name: Morphine

Quirk: Vampire Bat

Morph can take the form of a large vampire bat. In bat form he gains flight, claws, echolocation, and heat sense. In both bat and human forms, he has anesthetic saliva which numbs skin on contact and causes numbing/sleepiness when in the blood stream. He also retains sharp teeth. He can hold human form, bat form, or any in-between phase.

Limitations:

• He can ingest blood but it just makes him sleepy and full more than anything.
• His flight is weak-- even a sustained glide is difficult. He does better "hopping" from perch to perch in short bursts. He can't carry others.
• His claws aren't sharp. They are more for clinging to terrain/buildings than for hurting others.
• Echolocation has a low finesse-- he can't see skinny objects, such as telephone wires, and moving projectiles are difficult to keep track of.
• Heat sense works through his bat nose and has only a small range. He doesn't have heat vision-- he can just follow heat like a scent.
• Transforming takes energy and time-- he's vulnerable while changing, and it takes about 15 seconds for a full transformation.
• His eyesight becomes poorer in bat form.

Primary Course Focus: Medicine

Morph is pushily eager to please, in a skittish and somewhat slimy way. A lot of his comments and actions come off as not being entirely genuine, especially with hasty excuses, stuttered speech, and strained laughs. He makes up for his lack of charisma with sheer stubbornness, and isn't above being petty if he thinks he's been shortchanged. Still, he is adept at the work he does, even if he ends up improvising much of it. Morph is almost too emotive, which is part of why he seems to lack sincerity. Sometimes he sulks, sometimes he overreacts. Many times, he trips over his own words, having to backpedal through explanations and lacking consistency in his story. He tends to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind-- which is not always for the best-- but although he employs half-truths a lot, he's not likely to straight up lie.

A lot of the things he does, he does for the laughs-- he has a bit of a self-depreciating form of humor, and is fine with being a clown if it means lifting the mood of others around him.

Morpheus was often socially overshadowed by his older sister-- he was ungainly where she was graceful, and most of the physical perks of his bat form were sub-par compared to hers. Growing up, others often called him 'bed bug' or 'mosquito' due to the fact that he rarely used his bat form and had numbing spit and a taste for blood. Still, he never had  a problem with it. His sister Mia wanted to be a hero, and she had the looks and personality to match. She never excluded him nor de-valued him-- she actually relied on his ideas and support, and he grew amiable to the idea of continuing to do this as their careers progressed. Morph found a more backstage role, studying augments and medicine and applying to college in New York.

He developed his own support device meant to monitor vitals and deploy drugs mid-field for heroes. However, in his slightly blind pursuit for the ideal medicinal cocktail, he fell into a bad crowd-- his purchase of drugs off the books was used against him as blackmail material to provide for villains' support materials. Eventually they took it a step further, threatening Morpheus to follow these instructions: use his older sister's reputation as an established hero and his own scholarly ability to transfer to Schuyler's medical course, where he'd be instructed to both steal information and plant viruses in the university's security system. In addition to the blackmail, he was also offered a huge pay-- and if he succeeded, they promised to fund him if he wanted to continue making equipment for them. Morpheus justified it because, of course, 'he had no choice'.

Arriving at Schuyler and surrounded by the attitudes and platitudes of all the other heroes quickly changed Morpheus' mind. He was reminded of much of the enthusiastic do-gooding he and Mia had planned to do once they were older. He contacted authorities and staff and cooperated with them to have a few of the involved villains apprehended. His own reputation was tarnished, but thanks to the fact that he had been under duress, and that he had proven his good intentions, he was allowed to stay under parole (he knows this probably wouldn't have been the case had he been in either hero or support courses, and is reluctant to consider participating in either).

Rather than moving back home to study at his original college, Morpheus has chosen to stay at Schuyler University as he feels the safest here-- also, Mia has been cold towards him after finding out about his poorly made decisions and he's not fond of the idea of being in proximity of her work.

Summer 2019

A lot of turmoil, but a lot of new friendships made-- Morph has taken some steps to become more pro-active, gaining a lot of experience as more of a field medic, but he has a long way to go in terms of combat training and maneuverability. It's something he wants to expand upon in the upcoming year, as he finds the front lines actually suits him.

Probably due to the stress, his hair has begun greying prematurely, but he didn't participate in quirk fusions
