Sweet desert child, what are you going to do? ♪
From restless, novice spellcaster, to freshman of a prestigious academy, to aimlessly wandering wizard; lately, Yssa has been bouncing between the corners of Oram, alone. Though, her travels have found some direction— and company— following a brief stay at an inn turned open murder investigation. A gruesome thing, but it was an opportunity to get paid, perform some civil service, and the chance to solve a mystery didn’t hurt, either. Yssa was confident that she and her new companions could make quick work of the job, even after a brief hiccup and the party’s unexpected expansion from three to five. More minds to put to the task, and she didn’t mind the now reduced pay.
She’s not so confident anymore. What was packaged as a simple murder has become something overwhelmingly more sinister, something Yssa isn’t sure she can piece together— not that she’s all that motivated to, now. Her comfort in her party has wavered somewhat, too, but she still trusts most of them. Regardless of how she feels, they have to find a solution to what they’ve stumbled into, and it seems trust is what they need.
At least Yssa can say truthfully that she's being given plenty of new experiences here in Hymal.
Details and Stats
Likes
- Flowers: Yssa finds most plants fascinating, and flowers in particular are lovely— yellow ones most so! She keeps a few in the band of her hat at all times, dutiful in replacing them once they begin to wilt. Should the ones currently atop her head be damaged or lost, she'll be distressed until she can replace them.
- Gemstones: A fondness bred into her through pride and familiarity, Yssa not only values gemstones highly, but has very strong opinions surrounding them. Shoddy stones and the misuse of geniune ones are a couple of the exceptionally few things that can get Yssa frustrated, in her own quiet and tempered way.
- Spicy Foods: The taste of home and her father's cooking, anything spicy is an absolute treat to Yssa, even if it isn't exactly the same. She doesn't cook often for herself— she was never especially good at it— but when she does she tries to recreate what her father could make, scouring local stores for the right spices.
- Cheesy Romance Novels: Originally, Forbidden— the novel Klytie picked up at Ingrid’s— was just something she held onto and claimed to own to ease her satyr friend’s embarrassment; not that anyone actually ever believed it was Yssa’s. After cracking it open, though, she’s found that she genuinely enjoys the book. She’ll just… keep holding it for Klytie.
Dislikes
- Cold Weather: Hailing from the desert, and being a cold-blooded creature, Yssa isn’t familiar with or fond of particularly chilly conditions. It slows her down, or forces her to bundle up, or even just stay inside until it's warmer! Such a hassle! Snow sounds interesting, though…
- Excessive Clothing: Yssa doesn’t wear much; she doesn’t need to, she’s just a little lizard. She does enjoy accessories and the occasional, modest outfit, but to be fully dressed at all times would be very uncomfortable for her.
- Mess and Clutter: Prefering to keep things neat and tidy, it can be a genuine upset to Yssa when things get a bit too messy. Scattered papers, muddied cloak, far too many things stacked onto a desk; it’s all not very efficient or pleasant. And it’s not too much to ask, either! For this reason, she isn't often willing to let others handle or organize her things.
Hobbies
- Journal Keeping: Beyond it's practical use, writing down anything and everything she sees and thinks is a frequent pastime of Yssa's. Nothing beats a good journal, cared for as if it were an ancient tome, every page filled with neat lettering and notes of unspoken observations and thoughts, important or otherwise.
- Flower Pressing: While fresh yellow flowers have their place on her hat, many others find a home sandwiched between the pages of Yssa's journals. She likes to collect new flowers as she's introduced to them in her adventure— even with her botany knowledge, she's made a few messes learning which flowers press well.
Personality
Conscientious
Hardworking and dutiful, Yssa is thorough in doing what she thinks is right, heeding her moral compass in every choice she makes— even when what is right is not what is easiest. She doesn't shy away from conflict or hardship in pursuit of the "good" path with the ideal end, though she can struggle to identify it. Her eagerness to help, too, often makes her overly generous, frequently putting her in over her head. Still, she'll do her very best.
Loose Lipped
For someone so reserved with her own personal information, she's quick to share what she knows about others. Gossipy at best, woefully tactless at worst, Yssa tends to feel the need to divulge anything and everything that seems relevant to the current topic. She more often then not feels regretful for saying too much, but sorry doesn't take back that sensitive secret she just revealed aloud.
Private
It isn't that she's unsociable or has much to hide, Yssa simply... doesn't think others have much use, or desire, for her information. She doesn't like talking about herself, regardless, far more interested in discussing literally anything else. Thus, small tidbits about where she's from and what she's done are about all someone can hope to get from her.
Naive
She is by no means stupid— inexperienced, though, is a perfect description of Yssa. Dense, even, at times. She has little "real world" experience, and tends to be ignorant of many things, and overly trusting and confident in what she thinks she knows. Every now and then she connects the dots— if someone doesn't do it for her first— and has the rug pulled out from under her, but at least she's learning something when it happens.
The Story So Far
Pre-Campaign
Hailing from the deserts of Yrakros, Yssa is clearly very far from home— the particular reason why is something she has yet to share, though she has revealed that she had been attending a wizard academy before she set out, one she is still technically enrolled in. Prior to meeting with her current companions, she travelled around Oram alone for just a little over a month, making her a fresh adventurer without much experience. Back home she has two fathers and a sister, all adoptive— she's mentioned very little about her current contact with them.
Campaign
Joined by Mara and Sec after volunteering to solve the mysterious, apparent murder of a well-known explorer and archaeologist in Wenderfel, Yssa originally considered both the company and the task to be temporary, if a little bizarre— simply a quick opportunity to earn some money. Even with the following addition of Klytie and Fen, the path ahead seemed easy enough; explain Theodore's death and report back to their employer in the Capital.
Now the death of one man has spiraled into dealings with an ancient aberration and a cursed sword, encounters with dubious mercenaries, rumors that have shaken their trust in the man that began their journey, and a massive hole in a river. The only answer Yssa has now is the truth of how Theodore lost his life, and even that has defied her expectations— and it's no longer the end of this adventure.
Appearance
Description
A small, chubby, dusty brown lizardfolk with a cream-colored "underside", stretching from her chin to her thighs— this lighter color is also found on her fingers and the two stripes on her face that begin at her lips, follow up her snout, and wrap around her eyes. There are darker brown, wavy stripes all along her body, branching from a thick stripe starting on her snout and running down her back. Her toes also sport this darker brown. Her eyes are large and round, a warm, coppery orange, and have vertical pupils.
Clothing
She wears a maroon hooded cloak, which clasps at the neck with a golden button— the cloak is a bit too long and touches the ground. Atop her head is a dark purple wizard's hat with a dusty rose colored band, a drooping crown, and reflective gold thread sewn into the under-brim in the pattern of stars and constellations. There are almost always yellow flowers tucked into the band. Around her waist she wears her pack and spellbook, and underneath that, a deep purple scarf with a silvery paisley pattern. On her arms she wears fingerless black gloves that reach just before her elbows.
Design Notes
- She has four toes on either foot, but only three fingers on her hands (not including her thumbs).
- I usually draw her with two short lashes toward the bottom of her eyes.
- She has a little toof that sticks out sometimes.
FEN
[ party member ]
Fen terrifies Yssa— it's not fear for herself, however. Yssa wishes Fen was more cautious, and had some much needed concern for her own wellbeing. She's brushed off two near death experiences already! Underestimating Fen is not her goal— Yssa has made that mistake before. She understands, too, that Fen's only trying to help her mother, but... whatever that money is for, it can't be worth her life; it would relieve Yssa to hear Fen at least say that. Either way, she can take comfort in the fact that, now in the capital, she doesn't have to worry for much longer.
KLYTIE
[ party member ]
Yssa was overwhelmed at first by Klytie's... unsolicited attention, but as the satyr has calmed down with time and become less patronizing, Yssa has found that she appreciates her interest. It's flattering to have someone so enthused about her and all she is; though, she hasn't shared much about herself in spite of Klytie's consistent pestering. Yssa would like to, someday. Questions about her personal life are just hard to answer when they come suddenly and with such immense curiousity behind them. Besides that, Klytie's awkwardness and care have endeared her to Yssa. She's done so much for her, things Yssa feels she cannot repay— well, maybe a few answers would be some compensation.
MARA
[ party member ]
Mara... Mara is someone that Yssa still struggles to pin down. She's often rash and facetious. She's robbed others, killed without remorse— though Yssa doesn't necessarily blame her for that one. Despite that all, this bizarre rogue has also been open, generous, protective of Yssa and others in their ragtag group. With recent events, too, she's gained what little tentative trust Yssa is willing to give. She owes Mara a couple promises, as well. It's perhaps a very tall order, but Yssa likes to think she can help Mara find some solutions.
SEC
[ regretable party member ]
Upon meeting Sec, Yssa wasn't sure what to make of him, reckless and flippant; now she looks back on those traits and sees red flags she missed. He's broken her trust, and she's not entirely sure why she offered it in the first place. She doesn't know this man— what she does know, however, is that she cannot trust him again. What he's done is a threat to much more than their party's fragile relationships, and Yssa knows her failure to prevent this puts her at fault, too. Tearing him from that sword's— and it's current inhabitant's— influence is paramount. As for what becomes of Sec afterwards... She simply wants this to be over.
