Despair is an extremely anxious person, to the point where he freezes up if someone he doesn't know talks to him. He trusts a few people that he's extremely close with, and would most likely not survive separation. He is incredibly kind and absolutely loves bugs to the point that his special interest is moths.
Despair and his twin sister, Allison, were put into foster care at a young age, due to their biological parents being abusive. Luckily for them, it only took a few foster homes to end up with the Rubicundas, the family that adopted them in the end. With the Rubicundas, Despair managed to meet Raine while they were young. The two of them became instant best friends and continued to be close all throughout highschool and beyond. He currently lives with Allison and works as a librarian, still maintaining his friendship with Raine as well as her partner Lee and their mutual friend Parker. (That Despair is hopelessly in love with)
Parker is Despairs polar opposite, yet they get along extremely well. Despair has slowly developed a crush on Parker over the years of friendship, which he is absolutely not subtle about. Despair loves hard and obviously.
Despair and Raine have been best friends since they were young. They have always gotten along, and Raine has always protected Despair especially during his more anxious episodes. Despair would not survive without Raine.
Despair has been friends with Lee since they were in middle school together. They have had a rocky relationship due to their coinciding crushes on Raine, although have managed to stay close despite it. Their relationship has improved since Parker has entered their group and Despair developed feelings for them.
Despair found Onyx outside on the street when he'd first moved out of home with his sister, and instantly fell in love with the cat. He took him in, nursed him back to health, and they have formed a bond. Onyx does not like anyone but Despair, and Despair considers him a son
