Karina and Jovian's marriage was arranged. But Karina at least was quite pleased with it. She was very possessive and controlling of her husband. When he husband's carriage was found knocked over and him missing Karina was distraught and mostly furious. 

Mattia is Karina's right hand man in her extensive schemes. He is the highest ranking lord in her duchy. Some time after her husband's disappearance Karina and Mattia began a very loosely romantic relationship.

Ferris is Karina's oldest son and heir to the duchy. Karina has never quite seen her son as an adult or a threat. He may have been a little rebellious, but she saw him as harmless, easy to control with enough force. And overall considered him a good, obedient son. It was a surprise to her when he finally turned on and murdered her.

The closest Karina got to real affection or fondness for her young daughter was dressing her up like a perfect ornament and having her sit a seat or two down from her. Karina sees Viv as weak, soft, and unstable. Finds her to be inferior to herself in everyway and has consistently criticized her. She was happy to get rid of her when she was married off to Lazuli Nuumite.
