ABILITY: Shiso Flower (Aojiso no hana)

ABILITY DETAILS: Essentially, it’s self-revival and self-healing. Houdai is able to take damage from any physical attack which would normally cause damage (unlike his teammate, Makoto Fukuzawa, who takes no damage as long as her feet are planted and her ability active); however, any wound inflicted upon him by anyone other than himself will heal rapidly, including ones which would otherwise be fatal, such as a headshot or getting hit with a grenade. He does technically “die”, but this state of death lasts no longer than a minute while his body literally pulls itself back together (unless such a thing is not possible, like in the case of an explosion, in which case his body will simply teleport back to the same place and rebuild quickly to allow him to retaliate and/or escape). Also, if he accidentally injures himself, such as by falling off a building, he will heal, but if he were to intentionally inflict damage upon himself, he would suffer the effects of said injury as normal. His ability is technically always active on himself, but he can “pass” his ability on to protect someone else within a ten-meter radius of him at the cost of becoming vulnerable to damage himself; his ability will not work on him if he is using it to protect someone else.

BRIEF OVERVIEW: Some (namely, Shuusaku Dazai, Houdai’s cousin) would describe Houdai, in simple terms, as a “mean ass little twink who thinks he’s better than everyone”… and they wouldn’t be entirely wrong. Houdai is incredibly confident in himself, his skills, his prowess in battle, and his unsettling but undoubtedly powerful ability, and he’ll let anyone who sticks around long enough know about it. He’s also very quick to become snappy and aggressive if someone doubts him for even a moment; that said, he notably tones his behavior down when working with his teammates or superiors in the Port Mafia. And, of course, when he’s with Akira Akutagawa, whom he describes as the “love of his life, the one and only true love he’ll ever have”. Houdai has long believed in the inevitability of true love and the power it holds, thanks to the story of how his mothers found each other years ago, and now that he has it, he won’t risk losing it for anything… even if that means he has to risk losing his own life to protect it. After all, what good is it to live on if you cannot protect the thing you claim to love the most in the world?
