HistoryPersona 3 They met when they were still in middle school. Laiko's mother was invited and hired by the Kirijo Group to help them further their research on Shadows and the Dark Hour. Being a neuroscientist who specialized in experimenting on the power of Personas, Laiko's mother was one of the scientists that contributed to the modification of Mitsuru's Penthesilea to have secondary support skills. It was through this that Mitsuru and Laiko had already met prior to the latter joining S.E.E.S in the first place. She always chided him for overexerting himself, as well as constantly throwing away his cigarettes before giving up on that entirely due to udnerstanding that habits are very difficult to kick. Mitsuru was really the one person who witnessed Laiko have a full blown breakdown about S.E.E.S, his family, the Dark Hour, the projects of the Kiriko Group and was the one tho heard him blatantly say that he wanted to just end it all. Laiko; however, felt shame breaking down in front of her because in his head, weakness his not allowed. He would and should always stay strong because any sign of weakness would be harmful in the long run as an individual and as a member of S.E.E.S. It never really occured to Mitsuru that Laiko was in immense mental and emotional pain on top of his everexhaustion, as well as finding out that he was being treated as a guinea pig in regards to Persona powers by his own mother. Even when Laiko was mad at Mitsuru for the choices she makes and the fact she always piles responsibility on her shoulders, he loved her with his heart and knows her pain even though she says nothing. They never really shared really intimate moments, but after Laiko's breakdown, Mitsuru personally took it upon herself to try and just be there, assuming that he had not opened up to anyone else yet. In all honesty, Mitsuru saw Laiko's adoration for her as a great amount of trust and openness towards her rather than any sort of love, so when Rei told her about Laiko's feelings and how he wanted to spare any complications to her engagement, it really made her hit a wall because she never thought that he, let alone anyone had any romantic feelings for her. It was really painful knowing that he had to hide it to spare her feelings, but she decided that the best way that she could make him proud of her was to continue living to her fullest. After Graduation Day and Minato's death, Mitsuru visits Laiko's grave and tells him that she now knows how he felt and that she is flattered and thankful that of all people who could love her, he did, because she saw him as a good man. She laments not seeing it, but understanding why he spared it. She then says that if fate permitted it, and if he still were alive, perhaps she would have given him a chance.
