Alva Amell, (born 9:09 Dragon), is a human rogue (and later a member of the elusive Sky-Knights) party member available to be recruited. She is a companion of Hawke in Dragon Age II and a companion of the Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

A month after the Kirkwall Rebellion started, Alva leaves the confines of Starkhaven and along the way met up with the mysterious group of wyvern-riding soldiers called the Sky-Knights. She trained under them for nearly a year and left a litle while before the Conclave explosion. Though her original intent was to find her brother to warn him of Sebastian's possible attempt on his life, Alva ends up hearing rumors of someone called the Herald of Andraste, which leads her to the Hinterlands (and if recruited, to Haven) Like Varric, she is not a romance option for the Inquisitor, however, she can be set-up with Cullen if the Inquisitor does not pursue him in their playthrough.

Alva grew up with the Hawke's, after her biological father, Gamlen, found out about her existence. Around 9:12 Dragon, she was given to Gamlen by one of the workers in the Blooming Rose, stating that the child is their daughter. Unable to take the pressure of raising a kid, Gamlen sends one of the servants to where Leandra is, stating in a final letter that he can't raise a kid and she would do better. Even after knowing that, she treats Leandra like her own mother and her cousins as siblings.

Among them, she's usually the mischief-maker, often riling up Carver and teasing Bethany and Garrett/Marian. After an incident which almost revealed Bethany's (and Hawke if picked as a mage) status as a mage, Alva swore to keep her family safe, and began self-learning stealth techniques, and general rogue-like skills. Garrett/Marian found out about her training later on and with that, s/he starts pursuing the way of the warrior/rogue/mage. They train together most of the time, usually dragging in an unwilling Carver and sometimes have Bethany stand by in case they hurt themselves. Over all, she's had a relatively normal and safe childhood barring the ocassional run-in with some suspicious Templars.

Unique Class

A few months after the Kirkwall Rebellion started, Alva heads off on her own to explore more of Thedas. She stops by Fallow Mire, after hearing rumors of undead crawling the lands, and is saved from a nasty corpse by the captain of the rumored elusive Sky-Knights, Eilonwy. Alva, who is grateful for the captain's help, swore to repay them back by volunteering help with their various missions. Though she did not specifically stated that she wishes to train as a Sky-Knight, the captain still welcomed and placed her in their ranks and trained her to be inducted formally into the team. After a while, she was even given her own Sky-Wyvern as a mount. Alva never specified what sort of gruesome training she had underwent but she did mention how the training helped her be a lot less hot-headed and brash when her opinions are not favored by the other party.

A month before the Divine Conclave, Alva receives some alarming news that her friend (or former lover, if players have chosen to make Alva pursue him in the previous game) is looking for her sibling, either to blame them as part of the guilty party for the entire Kirkwall Rebellion or to warn them off from returning to the Free Marches for the time. Knowing that, Alva takes off and heads off to where Varric is rumored to be at, since he might have a clue as to where her sibling is. When the explosion occurs, she tries to scout for information which inevitably catches Leliana's atttention. When her background checks out, she convinces the Inquisitor to try and persuade her to join the Inquisition, which then starts Alva's recruitment quest. Upon the Spymaster's controlled information reaching Alva's ears, she heads towards Haven, stopping by the Hinterlands first before meeting up with the Inquisitor.

• Alva was originally planned to be a helper and a pseudo-member of Friends of Red Jenny but was changed after the realization that she would be too much like Sera. Though it has been confirmed that she goes and helps them out here and there, Alva is not a formal member but is instead inducted into the Sky-Knights.
• Depending on Sevalra's fate, Alva's response to the Inquisitor asking about her habit of caressing her braid will either be happy or somber in tone. This is a callback to one of her and Sevalra's quest, wherein they are seen braiding each other's hair.
