About

mary-base.png

The Gravedigger was a vicious pirate during the 1600's, feared for her brute strength in hand to hand combat. With a loyal pirate crew at her ready, The Gravedigger was the most notorious pirate of the seas. She died at the hands of her arch nemesis, but there's something strange about that. Almost 400 years later, the Gravedigger still traverses the desert with a shovel in hand- and her name is Mary.

Mary is a quiet girl whose schedule includes digging holes and working out. Very diligent on training her body, Mary can crumble mountains with a single punch, so it's a good idea NOT to get in a fight with her. She was once a fierce pirate captain, and it very easily shows. She's a very determined woman who does not let a lot get in her way.

Mary spends all day in the desert, digging holes until the sun goes down. What could she possibly be looking for?

"I ain't gonna stop until I take back what's mine! Ya hear me? Tonight, we sink a boat and sail as kings!"

Mary is not one to take life lightly. She is a very stoic woman and prefers to keep things superficial and brief. A tough nut to crack, Mary takes things very seriously and usually misses jokes unless she expects it coming. She can be harsh in most forms of the word, and if you're super unlucky, her old pirate demeanor will creep back in for an appearance.

Despite being a little rough around the edges, Mary enjoys having fun and going on adventures with friends when she has the chance. She's very loyal and passionate about things near and dear to her. She can be a little cocky, but if she doesn't need to be confronted, she rather sail under the radar. Friends know that she's a caring person- but she doesn't have a lot of friends. In general, she struggles with a lot of social connections and relies on close friends through situations she can't socially navigate.

Mary loves working out and spends most of her days doing so. She loves doing most of her daily activities alone, even if Sal is constantly around. She's a fan of sailing and taking long, grueling walks or runs. She becomes easily frustrated, and when frustrated, she tends to cry quickly. She hates it.

Your Father Would Be So Disappointed!

Born in England in 1643, Mary Sombrole was the sole daughter of the rich and luxurious Sombrole family. Crushed under the pressure of her rigid and harsh mother after her father left to "see the world", Mary was a feisty and rebellious young girl. Constantly going against her mother's wishes, Mary dirtied her expensive dresses, talked back to authority, and ran rampant through the streets of England with her close older friend, Treyabal. She was known locally as the “Richest Street Rat”, and Mary wore the nickname as a badge of honor.

Soon, however, Mary couldn't suffer her mother’s constant pressure any longer. As an final act of defiance, Mary stole a prized possession of the family’s- a key with no home she believed to have been left by her father- and left home. Running away from her stuffy life, Mary began to learn the ways of piracy from Treyabal, whose family was involved in the trade. Around the same time, Mary became very interested in physical combat. She was constantly and diligently training her skills and body, wanting to be able to take down any opponent that dared go against her. It felt good! She felt powerful! Mary and Treyabal stole a ship from the Vamilles, Treyabal's family, and began Mary’s pirate career.

When Seas Run Red, Swear Revenge!

Mary’s pirate stunts started small- robbing small shops and recruiting lone sailors and outcasts- but her small efforts slowly grew and began to be noticed by locals. Mary Sombrole became the rumored pirate captain, the "Gravedigger", of her ship, the Inferno. With Treyabal as her best mate, and recently rescued-from-sea Victor as a close second, the Gravedigger’s name grew as others saw her as an infamous pirate.

Word got around that a new pirate was sailing the seas, and the feared Captain Barren Red, captain of the Scarlet Vessel, was not about to have his reputation of being the most powerful pirate of the seas be usurped. Confronting the Gravedigger during his travels, Captain Barren Red attacked Mary, stole the key she had taken from home, and sunk the Inferno. Mary, stranded at sea, swore her revenge on Captain Barren Red, and she and her surviving crew members got themselves back to shore to start anew.

There was a large dark birthmark across the baby’s nose. Something so hideous could not be perfect! So… So why did Hannah die? His reasoning for Hannah’s death slowly crumbled, along with the rest of his hope for this situation to work. Thomas felt nothing but resentment for the baby, and for every reason it existed. Loud, consistent thoughts screamed at Thomas to do something about this horrible imperfection. They were terrifying thoughts, so Thomas tried his best to push them away and keep living his fragmented life.

You Just Won A Brand New Ship!

The group’s morale was low, especially as they were stranded with no ship, but Mary was not one to let her crew give up. The Gravedigger devised a plan to ambush the next ship visiting the island so they could escape. Sooner rather than later, a ship did dock on the island, and Mary took an interest in one of the sailors. He reminded her of herself, almost- he seemed bored in his work, and did not seem to be respected by his leader. Against Trey’s wishes, Mary singled out the sailor, a man named Antonio. She promised to spare Antonio's life if he helped her and her crew take his captain's ship. To Mary’s slight surprise, he agreed, and after an ambush, Mary's crew stole the ship and left the rest of Antonio’s crew for dead on the island. Mary then offered Antonio the choice to join her crew, and he accepted. He even helped Mary rename the ship something more fitting: the Water Coffin.

Fueled by her undying desire to exact revenge on Captain Barren Red, and take back her stolen bottle, Mary viciously trained her crew in the art of sword fighting, and trained herself in physical combat. Mary slowly regained her status as a feared pirate- and became even more feared than she was as the captain of the Inferno. The Gravedigger was the most powerful pirate sailing the seas.

N-Not Like I LIKE You Or Anything!

Antonio slowly rose in the ranks among Mary's crew. Helping Mary closely with training and overall being a loyal crew member, Antonio proved to be a good friend to Mary, and she made him her best mate. This angered Treyabal, as he was replaced by someone he saw as a complete joke. Treyabal and Victor made their distaste for Antonio known, but kept it under wraps around Mary, out of respect. The only crew member that liked Antonio at all was Sébastian, a shy nervous ex-member of Captain Barren Red's crew. Mary was happy to take in the traitor of her enemy, and his loyalty was apparent.

Mary and Antonio's friendship grew, and they quickly became best friends. They were close to inseparable; at night, Mary would tell Andy about her life, her hopes, and her dream to take down Captain Barren Red. Antonio shared stories from his past and life before becoming a pirate, which always made Mary feel a bit guilty, no matter how okay Antonio said things were. It was obvious Antonio had feelings for Mary- the crew could see it, but Mary stayed oblivious. Her crew was unsure if she was choosing to ignore it, or if she truly didn’t see it.

Regardless, during one night in particular, Mary and Antonio became intimate, despite Mary’s lack of explicit interest in Antonio. They chose to keep it a secret; Mary knew the kind of uproar it would cause among her crew if they found out she and Antonio had slept together, especially among Trey and Victor. It would stay a secret between Mary and Antonio.

Or, that's what they planned on doing. Mary didn't expect to get pregnant.

Mary didn't realize it until she started to show, and she started to panic. No one could find out about this, especially her enemies! Needing to lay low, The Gravedigger disappeared off the pirate map for a while, which baffled sailors and other pirates alike. Mary regretfully told her crew about her situation as she would need to leave her position for a short while; she created a fake father to protect Antonio, but Trey and Victor, especially, had their doubts. Out of respect for their captain, however, they continued to run the ship while Mary went into hiding.

Not long after, Mary and Antonio's son, Ángel, was born. Mary knew it was impossible to raise a child and continue living the life she had, so she left Ángel with a woman Antonio knew from before his pirate days. The decision was always one that made Mary’s stomach flip, but she knew it was the choice she was going to make no matter the circumstance. Leaving her son behind, Mary forced herself to swallow her feelings and return as captain of the Water Coffin.

Wait, That's Not In The Rules, I Don't Think...?

Mary continued to improve her combat skills and train her crew. The group continued to gather wealth, conquer other ships, and make a name for themselves as the most feared pirates to sail the seas. At 24, the stars aligned in just the right way to allow Mary to plan a heist against her rival, Captain Barren Red. Ambushing the Scarlet Vessel, Mary and her crew attacked Captain Barren Red and his crew. She aimed not only to take back her key, but to sink his ship as he had sunk hers. As the two crews brawled, Mary confronted the captain. They fought for a while, the Captain retaliating better than he had in the past, and he used the key to catch Mary off guard. He seized the moment of Mary’s weakness and shot her in the chest, pushing her overboard and letting her sink to the bottom of the sea.

Mary's determination caught the eye of one of the Twelve Gods of the World. The Gravedigger was confronted with an entity in the form of intense flames, and she bargained for her life and for a chance to find what was rightfully hers. The entity doesn't normally indulge in human affairs, but Mary wasn’t a courageous pirate captain without some form of charisma, and the entity took an interest in Mary's plight. They settled on a deal- the entity would Spare Mary, and bring her back to life, until Mary found the key she lost to Captain Barren Red so long ago. With an understanding in place, Mary was reborn, determined to find the key she gave her soul up for.

Following clues and history for several years, Mary was led to a desert, where she began to dig holes day in and day out, looking for her treasure. In this desert she met Sal, a phantom with a strange and vague past, but full of energy and excitement. At first Mary found Sal to be irritating, but the two eventually became friends, travelling the desert together.

Mary spends all her days in the blistering heat of the desert, digging holes with her best friend Sal. She makes it a point not to make friends, due to the nature of her deal with Death, so she remains rather lonely and hard to find. She keeps away from civilization most of the time, taking each day of the growing years one step at a time.

Relationships

Andy

1541329?

Crew Member/Best Friend/Crush??

From the time Mary and Antonio met, it was obvious they were going to become best friends. First mate on the Water Coffin, Antonio was always there to support Mary and all of her decisions. He shot through the ranks of Mary's crew and became her right hand man, aiding her endeavors. She would have done anything for him. But! Just as friends, of course! She has NEVER had any sort of feelings for him! Ever!

Sal

1542533?

Best Friend

When people say opposites attract, they are referring to Mary and Sal. While Mary prefers quietness and calmness, Sal is bursting with energy and eager to make new friends. Regardless, the two are inseparable. Mary appreciates Sal's friendship and the kindess they have to offer. Both learned early on they cannot harm each other, so they simply co-exist and keep each other company on long, sunny, desert days.

Trey

1844877?

Crew Member/Mentor

Trey was always a close friend of Mary's. After all, he's the one who helped her become the pirate she aspired to be! Always posing as something of a big brother figure to her, Mary looked to him for guidance and wisdom as she set out on her pirate journey. He was always able to make her laugh. His rivalry with Antonio was always a point of tension for her to deal with.

Sébastian

1844794?

Crew Member

Once a member to Captain Barren Red, Mary ran Sébastian through multiple trials before allowing him to join her crew, but it proved to be a good decision. Sébastian was nothing but loyal to Mary, and she greatly appreciated it. Something of a suck-up, Sébastian always went out of his way to prove himself to Mary. He quickly mirrored Mary in the way he showed mentorship-like respect for Trey, as well.

Victor

1844826?

Crew Member

After saving Victor from drowning after a shipwreck, Mary made him part of her crew. Victor, feeling indebted to Mary for saving his life, swore his loyalty to her and remained a faithful member of the Water Coffin. Mary admired his no-nonsense attitude and even harbored a crush on him for a short time, but it was nothing to harp on.

Captain Barren Red

1844943?

Sworn Enemy

Ever since Mary entered the pirate scene, her rival was clear. Captain Barren Red was the only other pirate with a reputation, a reputation Mary wanted. He sunk her first ship, and from then on, Mary swore she'd exact her revenge. His haughty attitude and need to show off his wealth gets on Mary's nerves. Not to mention, he stole her key! And she swears she'll get it back!

Esther

1844990?

Enemy

Esther was such a brat! Mary could never stand her- especially since she worked under Captain Barren Red. Something about Esther was different than the others; the girl seemed to have a certain hatred for Mary. It was evident when Mary had to fight against her hand-to-hand- but it's not like Mary minded! She loved beating the shit out of people who deserve it!

Brig

1845026?

Enemy

Mary knew Brig was a part of the Scarlet Vessel, but she rarely saw her at all. From what she saw, beyond the obvious hatred towards supporting her rival, she felt a sort of respect for the woman, who seemed to show respect for her in return. Nonetheless, Brig was always a worthy opponent to go against.

Chief

1845053?

Enemy

The scariest person on the Scarlet Vessel, in Mary's opinion, was the one who strikes in the night! Mary had never seen them, but knew Chief hit hard when it came to attacks. Mary couldn't help but respect such a tough opponent, and couldn't help but be a little jealous of the Captain for having a deadly crew member. To this day, Mary thinks about their impact on her career.

Commodus

1579471?1561175642

Nuisance

In the desert, there isn't much company aside from Sal and... well, this guy. Mary has tried time and time again to enter the castle he lives in, but has learned Commodus loves keeping people out. She knows she can't hurt him, so instead loves testing her luck and stealing from him when she can. Commodus poses as no real threat to her, so why not have some fun?
