chaLeland is an extremely talented and cunning freelance mercenary based in Shabalwird who makes his living stealing and gathering information for his clients and is committed to never taking jobs that hurt innocent or disadvantaged individuals. Though his career suits his talents well, he feels uneasy with himself and is growing increasingly restless with the monotony of his life and with his lack of substantial connection with other people, most notably his family who he hesitates to reconnect with out of fear of them disapproving of his lifestyle.
Early Life.
Leland was born to his mother, Lesley Anlow, on an island in the Eteron Wildlands. It grew up alongside its sister, Lucas, and it was close to its family despite its rebelliousness in its teenage years. His mother was always very supportive and enthusiastic of any of Leland’s new and odd interests, be they lockpicking or knife throwing, and trusted that Leland’s heart was in the right place. Around the age of 17, he moved away from home and took up work as a thief.
Over the years, Leland gradually lost touch with its mother and sister as it had been finding it increasingly difficult to explain its career path to them in a way that hopefully wouldn’t elicit judgment. It regrets this greatly but doesn’t know how to reconnect with them, and has since taken to filling his life with an empty abundance of friends and acquaintances to mask the void his family left.
Present Day.
Leland now lives in the bustling port city Shabalwird where he’s been able to grow a wide rotating cast of connections and clients due to the city’s status as a travel hub. He’s made an ample living for himself via thievery as well as taking odd jobs with the Mercenary Volunteer Union, where he met and became friends with Ria Beddowel after working several missions together. One day, Leland met Callisto Ganymede, who was traveling to Neverwinter to start their first semester of college. Leland, already about to travel to southeastern Geyetesh for a job, offered to accompany them on the way there for their safety.
Upon finishing his job in southeastern Geyetesh, Leland encountered the new and seemingly directionless Safety in Numbers adventuring party (then consisting of Cassie Manewrangler, Bramble Trevally, and Emma Heatherbane) at an inn and, after chatting them up a bit, offered them his expertise in traveling and investigation and explained his arrangement with Callisto. Cassie, enthusiastic, invited them both to tag along with open arms, and Bramble and Emma, suspicious and untrusting of Leland, begrudgingly caved. Soon thereafter, the group met and recruited Mabel Mossgrove in Thunderhead Fjord. Leland, remembering Ria Beddowel lived nearby, then suggested traveling north in hopes of recruiting him for their quest, which they then succeeded in doing.

leland’s hair is always neatly buzzed to his liking and he rarely lets his facial hair grow out.

leland generally sticks to practical but stylish clothing, however he greatly enjoys wearing fancier clothes when he gets the opportunity (something he hides from the party to protect his roguish image). he typically wears tall boots, tight-fitting shirts, and high waisted trousers, as well as his scarf.

theme animalLeland is incredibly intelligent, perceptive, good with words, and a master at improvisation, but his attempts at being charismatic almost always fall flat. Though very smooth-talking in theory, something about him makes him come across as untrustworthy and conniving to others when he is actually, contrary to popular belief, usually quite genuine.
He is secretly very insecure about his self-image, whether it be his appearance, skills, reputation, or personality. The general lack of trust others have for him is one of the main factors contributing to his growing feeling of emptiness stemming from his intense need for (proverbial) human connection. One of his main reasons for joining the Safety in Numbers adventuring party was hopefully filling that void.

Mabel Mossgrove (possible intrigue)
Since joining the party, Leland has grown relatively close with Mabel, and feels responsible for his safety due to Mabel's lack of experience adventuring or defending himself. Leland is happy to help, but it doesn't realize the extent to which Mabel depends on it, and neither realize that it's functionally becoming a stand-in for Leary Salacia's role in Mabel's life. Leland is also inadvertently making this worse by trying to get Mabel to accept the possibility of Leary's death.
Ria Beddowel (work friend)
Out of everyone else in the party, Leland has known Ria the longest. Though they're not close friends, they have a mutual respect and trust of one another after having worked multiple mercenary jobs together. They have an ability to silently communicate with one another that no one else in the group seems to understand.
Emma Heatherbane (friend?)
Leland is intrigued with Emma and wants to know more about him, but doesn't exactly know how to engage with him aside from teasing him like a schoolkid with a crush. Though Leland doesn't ever mean any substantial harm, he is incessantly proficient at pushing Emma's buttons, and Emma is too stubborn to turn the other cheek. Their conflicts cause the most discord within the group.
Callisto Ganymede (friend)
Leland offered to escort Callisto to their first semester of college and the two became good friends on the way there. They enjoy spending time with each other and goofing around.
Bramble Trevally (ally)
Bramble's cautious and reserved nature is in direct opposition with Leland's outgoing tendencies. Bramble dislikes Leland, though Leland does not return his distrust.
