Kaede is a young teenage male with black hair, golden-yellow eyes, and a pale skin tone. His mother, Akira, mentions how he looks much like his father, Ryuji, the only difference being his hair color.
He wears the normal Obelisk Blue male Uniform during school hours, keeping his jacket open. Instead of blue boots worn by most of the Obelisk boys, Kaede wears a pair of black boots, with silver accents.

His last name Sanada comes from the kanji 真 (sana) eaning "real, genuine" and 田 (ta) meaning "field, rice paddy", while his first name Kaede comes from 楓 (kaede) meaning "maple".
Kaede Sanada (真田 楓 Kaede Sanada) is a character in the "Trials of Darkness" story. He is a second year Obelisk Blue student who later joins the group in protecting the Sacred Beast cards.
was born on February 11th to Ryuji and Akira Sanada in Osaka, Japan. The first year of his birth was happy and he enjoyed being with his parents, who both took a leave of abense from work to care for him. When he was around two-years-old, Ryuji suddenly passed away, leaving Akira as a single mother. Though the cause of her husband's death was still unclear, Akira pushed forward to do what she could to raise Kaede.
Despite Akira having to work two jobs to make end mets, Kaede had a good childhood. He soon got into Duel Monstesr and found himself leaning towards the DARK-Attributed monsters. Even though she was often busy, Akira was able to help Kaede further his interest in Duel Monsters. She bought him his first set of cards, "Shadowviel Dragon" archetype that focused on LV and Traps.
Years later, Kaede decided to enroll at Duel Academy, his dream to enter the Professional Leagues. Though it took a while for Akira to get the money together, they were able to make it happen.

Kaede uses a "Shadowveil Dragon" Deck. They are a DARK-Dragon type deck, that focuses on LVs and Trap cards, with effects varying. His ace is "Shadowveil Dragon Nightmare LV10".
It is later discovered that Kaede's real deck is an archetype called "Shadoworld", one that focused on Shadow Counters. His ace card being "Khaos, Shadoworld Dragon of Anarchy".

Kaede had noticed Kylie during the Entrance Exams, like some of the second and third years, he had gone to the Kaiba Dome to see the new students. Like most, he was impressed with Kylie and her ability to win in three turns.
With Kylie was placed in Obelisk, she and Kaede had run into each other a couple of times, but nothing ever to get them to speak to each other.
As time went on, Kaede started to develop feelings or first year, but kept it to himself.
Raised entirely by his mother since his father's untimely death, Kaede is extremely close to his mother, Akira. He cares very much for her and often worries when she overworks herself, especially now with her trying to take care of the loan she had to take out to let Kaede attend Duel Academy. Akira is the one person that Kaede will do anything for; unfortunately, it is also his weakness.
It is later revealed that Kaede's great-grandfather had threatened Akira, forcing Kaede to work for him (after leanring he was his great-grandson). Not wanting his mother to get hurt, or worse, Kaede agreed.

In Trials of Darkness there isn't much of a relationship. With Kaede leaving partway for a family "issue", Asami didn't pay too much to him.
In Trials of Light, Kaede ends up being the one person Asami can confide with after Jaden goes missing, and Chazz goes nuts and later Kylie following his lead. When searching for Jaden, they find they have something in common, besides Duel Monsters. Kaede continued to hang around Asami and rest of the gang at the Slifer Dorm; he eventually left Obelisk when the White Obelisk started going, finding shelter at the Slifer Dorm. The more time they spent together, the more they started liking each other. By the time of the Domino City Field Trip, Asami and Kaede are officially dating, but keeping it on the downlow.
Kaede doesn't remember much of his father, as Ryuji had passed away unexpectedly when he was just about two years old. Though his infant memories of his father have faded over time, Akira constantly talks about the good of him, which has Kaede know more about him.
Akira mentions to Kaede all the time that he looks just like his father.
Kaede's relationship with his great-grandfather is... not good. He doesn't like nor care for his great-grandfather and finds his wants of sacrificing Duel Monster Spirits to the Sacred Beasts to gain eternal youth. Unfortunately, Kaede was dragged into it when Kagemaru threatened Aki, something Kaede wasn't going to let happen.
For the longest time, Kaede didn't evne know his mother's grandfather was alive. Akira had left home as a teenager, and with her grandfather as her legal guardian, she wanted to get away. Akira had never spoken about her family, only that her parents had passed away at some point. It wasn't until he was sixteen did he find out about the connectioin.
