After being found left behind by his parents at the age of 4, Fred has been under the care of Charlie who he sees as an older brother. For an even longer time, however, Fred has been ill with a rare illness that gives him awful bouts of pain every few days, sometimes even lasting hours. The treatment for said illness is very expensive, and both he and Charlie are very poor and live in a simple hovel. Charlie, however, is determined to save up money as the head for his circus that he started because of the small boy's love for circuses.
