About

Raylah is one of the main characters of Lotus. A high fantasy world set on a planet that takes its name from being shaped like the flower.

Lotus is not so much a story as it is a hub for tales to be told. The stories within Lotus are Tales of Tyrants, Queen’s Parade and Heaven Falls, in that order.

Raylah appears as the protagonist in the last two stories. She is a morally gray character who albeit can be quite heroic, is neither the hero nor the villain of the stories and instead serves as a vehicle through which readers can explore the world of Lotus. It's important to note that there is a 640+ year gap between Queen's Parade and Heaven Falls, which allows for significant changes in the world of Lotus to take place.

Backstory

Raylah was originally the princess of a kingdom that fell when she was young. However, she was bound to an eldritch being named EB, who gave her powers and helped her rebuild the kingdom as its queen.

During Queen’s Parade, we follow Raylah as she rediscovers the world her father left behind, and meets her now chosen family. Giving them crests that signify their bond.

After her adventure discovering the new world, EB, who had previously been locked in her, asks her to be freed, for it doesn't want to be bound to anything anymore. Raylah, who loves the eldritch creature like a parent, decides to do so.

For that she enters the castle and leaves everything behind to work on undoing its curse.

This does not go well.

During Heaven Falls, we follow this same world as the last genuine god begins to die. Opening up a slot for any other worthy creature to take his place.

Every possible candidate is notified, Raylah being one of such receives the message while still unlocking EB. She decides that it would be a faster solution. EB seems to be against it but she ignores them.

Little into her mission she discovers how long it has been since she entered the castle.

Somehow centuries passed while to her it seemed like a year.

Raylah begins to uncover who she is, and what her family truly means to her now that most of it is gone. Raylah makes her way to all descendants of her followers, reuniting them once more; and discovers with a more mature outlook how horrid the world truly is.

She decides to go in search of the goal (Heaven Falls) to become a god and fix it. Fully knowing how many more individuals, groups and factions are looking for it.

Raylah as a person

Raylah's personality is characterized by a mix of friendliness, stubbornness, and curiosity.

She is well-brought-up but is somewhat unknowing of the world around her, which makes her open to learning new things. However, her stubbornness can sometimes get in the way of her progress or cause problems for herself or others.

She is curious by nature, which leads her to make important discoveries and decisions throughout the stories.

Raylah's use of violence to achieve her goals is a point of moral ambiguity in the stories. While she is rightfully motivated, she often goes about achieving her goals in a more violent manner than others might approve of.

However, this can be seen as a result of her being a child of circumstance.

Raylah in story

Over the course of the stories, Raylah experiences significant character growth, both physically and mentally.

In Queen's Parade, she experiences the world with childlike wonder, but in Heaven Falls, she fully understands the meaning of her actions and the consequences they have on others. This growth is exemplified by her decision to seek out the descendants of the Crestholders and witness the world's development after her actions.

Throughout the stories, Raylah's motivations and goals evolve.

In the first story, Queen's Parade, she is primarily driven by a desire to explore the world and break free from the confines of the castle where she was raised. However, in the second story, Heaven Falls, she has matured and become more responsible.

She seeks to make the world a better place and uses her powers to protect and help those in need.

Additionally, her kingdom becomes a safe haven for less humanoid creatures, which causes controversy and conflict with other characters and factions.

The catalyst of a trifecta.

Design Notes

  • Raylah's skin is purplish during Queen's Parade due to the fact that she is categorized as an undead at that point.
  • As a witch, Raylah could potentially have normal teeth instead of fangs, but I enjoy the fangs.
  • Raylah's Heaven Falls' design has pieces from all three parents. Conjoining the King's crown/sword. The mother's dress and EB's original appearance as conduit eyes.

Abilities

[Alight]

This ability allows the user to gift its own energy to both animate and inanimate objects around them.

Animate objects will have their general growth stimulated, healing them and allowing them to evolve. Inanimate objects will become animate, and will serve whomever has given them the energy.

Inanimate objects continually showered by [alight] will end up developing a soul and a will of their own.

[World's Words]

This ability allows the user to converse directly with the living planet of Lotus.

Whereupon knowing its language can allow people to gift it poems and recitals in exchange of the casting of high tier spells. Users of this unique ability can outright make requests. For the world already loves them.

[Myth]

This ability allows the user to cover themselves in a thin membrane that deflects physical and magical attacks as if they slid off. It is difficult to cover the entire body, myth will often just cover one body part.

[Note: This ability must be used with caution, for extended lengths of time in this form will harden the body into a permanent frozen state. Like a statue.]
