Artoria is a homunculus created by some powers- intended to replace a night hag's empty seat in a coven. They created multiple homunculi and pit them against each other to find the strongest one. In the end, Artoria and Artorias were the last two, and as they stuck together closely and refused to harm one another- it was decided in the end, that the stronger of the two would prove themselves eventually and just destroy the other. Artorias, the more magically inclined of the two and realizing that due to his natural ability, would eventually come to realize that Artoria would be killed as a result of her being the lesser of the two. So... he ran away, turning his back on it and setting off on his own.

They used to be quite friendly when they were younger, but after having both of them witness the horror of watching the hags rid themselves of the failed subjects of their trials to find the perfect replacement, Artoria is excited because SURELY that means they'll have to choose her as their star pupil- since Artorias is long gone... Nope, they still want Artorias because magically, he is stronger. This angers her, and even though she's directed to set out, find him, and bring him back, she decides for herself that she won't be bringing him back alive, even if it's the last thing she does.
