Azarin's Links
Azarin and Scarlow were once inseparable, and more often than not, Azarin would get into trouble and drag Scarlow down with him. On the last day they were friends, Azarin suggested they take some food from the inn, and Although Scarlow tried to stop him he would not be dissuaded. He was found out, and the innkeeper was summoned to resolve the issue. Firm in his belief that troublemakers should be made examples of, he overpowered Scarlow and caused him to claw at Azarin’s eye. Since the day of the betrayal, Azarin has avoided Scarlow out of fear and disgust.
Azarin was once Scarlow's closest and dearest friend, and even now he cherishes Azarin from a distance. Azarin was a burgeoning oarsman employed at the edges of the island. Scarlow was the newest apprentice of the island's master, who often kept him mid-land. Even with their difference in location, they still found time to explore and play and talk to each other. All that changed when Scarlow's master, overwhelmed by cold vengeance, took control of his apprentice and forced him to slash Azarin's eye out as punishment for theft. Scarlow can see the fear and discomfort in Azarin's face any time he's near, so for the sake of his friend, he keeps his distance.
As much as he tries to resist the urge, Azarin can’t help but feel pity and protectiveness over Rioche. She seems such a gentle, fragile soul to him, and his first inclination is to help her (even though his “help” tends to worsen situations). Knowing Rioche’s master to be a cruel, vindictive man, Azarin aims to be conditionally kind to her and be her haven, but often feels his intentions fall short of their purpose.
Rioche has taken notice of Azarin’s kindness towards her and she appreciates it more than she's given time to communicate. Typically she works in her master’s chambers or his inn, and her duties never take her to the dock where Azarin works. On the treasured occasions where she gets to see him, she always brings her biggest smile and warmest hugs.
