The Hamlet

Ok so like, hamlet in the middle of nowhere on the coast somewhere. It’s a pretty poor place; disconnected from any real bigger cities or anything like that so population ends up relying on each other a lot. Pretty tight knit community and all that. Something happens that kind of cripples the hamlet, be it sickness or famine or something like that, and people start turning to faith for help, because it’s all they have. Anteresa, a human woman, in her plea of faith, gets an answer but not exactly from a holy god, but from some unknown entity. Now, blanks in the story here because I haven’t thought about it too much but she ends up bringing the hamlet back to prosperity soon after this vision either through divine intervention or whatnot which ends up basically causes the population to become indebted to her in a way, which plants the seeds of her preaching her faith of her god that came to her and propping herself up as an acolyte and beacon of the hamlet. And she, in turn, becomes indebted and obsessed with the “god” she saw in her dreams, saving her and her village from the brink if destruction. And she has a degree of authority that is planted in her as she is the only one who has communicated with this divine entity. It’s what allows the cult to propagate.

Faldir doesn’t arrive until later after the hamlet has been brought to its prime, and after the population is devoted to this idea of this god. How exactly he comes to be I’m not exactly sure yet. Whether a creation of this astral being or a natural birth somehow, I don’t know! And how exactly he comes to be in the hamlet, I’m not too sure yet either! The main thing is that Anteresa finds him as a baby either through a vision from her god or something like that and takes it as a sign. On his person too, she finds a gemstone (could be embedded in his egg if he was hatched from an egg, for example). She’s never fully understood her visions, and is, rather, forced to interpret them. And so, without being explicitly told, and not exactly knowing the origin of Faldir himself, takes it as a sign that she was granted a gift, or a key, from her god. So she takes it upon herself to raise Faldir as her own. She, in her own mind, has been granted a child from her god and designated to be his mother. And due to this divine prescription, she begins to exclusively refer to herself as Mother, as that is her sole purpose. To mother Faldir so that he can bring her god into the material plane and grant prosperity to all. Mother loves Faldir in her own sense of the word. She’s strict, hard on him, and controlling. He is her key, and property. He’s a token to be propped up to prove her faith is supreme over anyone else. That she is her god’s acolyte because she was gifted his child. Both Faldir, and the gem that was found on his body, which was later fashioned into an amulet, are pieces of a puzzle that she doesn’t know how to complete yet. As Faldir grows and is inherently magical—a trait unique to him in this magically inept hamlet—it all supports her theory. And in the end, she treats Faldir and that gem as one in the same, the same amount of love and ownership over each.

Over the years, there have been travelers and others from outside the village that have either been indoctrinated into their cult, or killed if suspected of transgressions. And so, eventually, word of the hamlet’s cult gets out and is spread to some holy church. And more specifically, their goals of bringing this eldritch being into the material plane via Faldir. But information is sparse, so they need to send someone in to infiltrate the cult, learn their secrets, plans, and eventually kill Faldir. They bequeath this monumental task onto a esteemed member of the church; someone who has spent his entire life devout under this church. A half-elf named Lyrentel. He’s not a trained assassin, but he’s proven his competence before, and he was eager to take on this task. So it wasn’t hard to convince him to set off as it was for the “good of the people” and whatnot. Lyrental makes his acquaintance with the cult and after successfully deceiving his way into not being a threat, he is eventually introduced to Faldir, who is…not what he expects. A monster, he expects. A fiend and viscous creature that follows a beast that should be banished to the hells. But Faldir is, rather, personable, and immediately shatters Lyrental’s expectations. Lyrental himself was raised sheltered as well, under the church. And his perception of others and enemies of the church slowly change as he lives within the walls of the hamlet for a about a year. It’s a long thing but to cut it short, he starts to struggle with a lot of conflicting emotions during this time. All the while, Faldir has taken a liking to him and Lyrental himself shares these feelings somewhere deeper, more repressed. He doesn’t know how to deal with it and looses focus on his mission as he’s wrecked with this internal conflict. It all culminates into a moment where Faldir basically confesses and it freaks Lyrental out so much that he fucking stabs Faldir in the middle of a ritualistic dance, surrounded by the whole hamlet. Faldir almost dies and Lyrental is very quickly disposed of. Years go by Mother begins to become more controlling. More protective. And more closed off. And that moment, to Faldir, sprouts seeds of doubts into his mind. Both fear of his own mortality and the fleeting future allow him to build up the courage to breakaway and set out on his own.
