Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Orange-ish blonde hair that trails to her waist, commonly worn in a braid
  • Blue eyes
  • Fair skinned
  • Short in height (average for her age)
  • Typical build for an active child

Clothing Style

Mary dresses in relatively simple outfits, although they often have some ornate embroidery on them. She tends to dress in primarily red, white, and black outfits in autumn/winter, but she'll wear lighter colors (especially light blue) in spring/summer, although she'll keep her red cloak and bandana. She typically wears dresses or a top with a skirt, and she'll also wear leggings in cooler weather. She has various boot styles, and sometimes instead of her cloak she'll wear a shawl or also a scarf if the weather is cold enough. Her hair is usually tied back with a bow at the end of her braid.

Personality

Mary is a cheery and eager young girl who can often be too curious for her own good. She can be resourceful and inventive, and she's smart enough to fend for herself in the forest if needed. However, she's rather naive and overly trusting of others, and she can be rather easy to trick or manipulate if her sweet nature is appealed to. This can be bad when it comes to ill tending folk, but she's also very good about not judging anyone by their appearance or by hearsay. She's rather sheltered by her family and the people of her village, so she doesn't know much about the dark nature of some people. However, she gives her all into her tasks and does her best to not let anyone down. She comes off as very independent for her age, and she’s not afraid to take risks or try new things, but this can sometimes make her reckless.

  • Genuine, moral, and down to earth
  • Curious, eager, and compassionate
  • Resourceful, quick witted, and adapts well to change

Weaknesses

  • Naive, a little gullible, and can be overly trusting

  • Lets her curiosity control her and can get into trouble because of it
  • Believes in the good in everyone but is willing to give another chance to even those who clearly don't deserve it

Backstory

Mary was born and grew up in a small village called Rotenberg, which was surrounded by a forest inhabited by strange and mystic creatures. The most valued law of the village was to never listen to the creatures of the forest, since they are tricksters that only intended harm upon the humans. Mary's mother and older sister were adamant about telling her to obey that rule, for her grandmother was eaten by a denizen of the forest after falling for one of its lies.

Every night it is Mary's job to light the lanterns along the forest path all the way up to a cottage in the heart of the wood, for this light keeps the king of the forest away. This job was originally her older sister's, yet as the forest folk have become more troublesome and the king of the forest has become more active and dangerous, the job was passed onto Mary so her sister could patrol the woods. Mary has no fear when entering the forest, which cannot be said about very many of the villagers, yet she can be rather naive and doesn't entirely believe all the forest folk are malicious. This can sometimes cause friction between her and her sister, since Kath utterly despises the creatures of the forest and would gladly shoot down any of them that threaten any of the humans.

Trivia:

  • Mary and the rest of the cast of Little Red Riding Boots came from a school assignment where we had to write some kind of new interpretation of a German fairy tale. It was for German class, but the story didn't have to be in German. I obviously picked a variation on Little Red Riding Hood, with the implication that the hood is passed down and implies some kind of responsibility, with Mary being the current wearer while her sister, Kath, was the previous one.
