In real life, red and arctic foxes have farmed variants known as ranch foxes (color guide) that are mainly used for their fur, yet there are many who have them as pets. Their various coats are a result of selective breeding and the Russian silvers are most known for this domestication process. The rheno fox in Cadavard is based on the complete domestication of the red fox, just like the wolf-like ancestor that led to gray wolves and dogs. Rheno is Latin for fur, peltry. It's based on the origin of ranch fox which are used in fur farms.
