Backstory
Half a year before the Ohu army came to recruit the Igas into their army, two male pups are born to a pair of secret lovers, male from Kôga, female from Iga. The parents decide to take their pups and run away together, but before they get the chance, Kurojaki finds out about them, and in fury, demands the family to be killed. The father of the pups sacrifices himself so that his family may escape. Before the mom and pups manage to escape, Kurojaki curses the pups and tells them that they don't belong, not with Kôgas, or Igas, and that they will never be home. The pups take these words to heart and carry them their whole lives. The family eventually gets to safety, but the mother becomes sick. She manages to teach few techniques to her sons before passing away. Shou and Ryo are now alone, thinking they don't belong anywhere. They take the forest near Furusato as their own and start scaring other dogs away by using their ninja-skills. Soon a rumour of a large shinobi-clan living in the forest starts to spread.
This rumour is heard by Hairoo who later tells this to Shin and his friends. Shin, Pink Dragon and Torayuri come to their forest, looking for soldiers, only to discover that there really is just two shinobis living there. The brothers tell their sad story and the curse put on them by Kurojaki, but the three manage to talk some sense into the brothers, and persuade them to come find their own place in the world with them. The two brother join Shin's small army, finally free of Kurojaki's curse.
Trivia
As the light-colored manes on Kôga-dogs seems to be part of the leader-family (Kurojaki and Tesshin being the only ones to posses such manes in canon (Except for the anime-version of the Elder)), there is a chance that Ryo's and Shou's father was related to Kurojaki in some way, as Shou too has white mane.
If their father is indeed related to Kurojaki, this would mean that Ryo and Shou are Tesshin's causins.
Shou loves butterflies, especially Brimstones.
