Second son to Father Maydove, Feren is a warlock in training. He is originally from the opposite end of Arcadia where his father hails, but he and Felix now live on the countryside of Lunar Crest.

Feren is haughty, tempermental, and highly emotional. Though striving to be hone his magical abilities, he has difficulty learning in the same way his peers do. His lack of intellect and overall knowledge is made up by his larger-than-life ego and determination.

He has had a forced pact with Mal from birth, but their shared power was dormant for a long time.

Story

Past

Hatched from the last egg of the Great Golden Dragon, Evangeline, Feren's very existence is controversial. Due to Florence's unfortunate ties to Mal, Feren is born with an inherent pact to the shadow devil. He also hatches with a single golden dragon arm, a physical manifestation of his late mother, proof that he carries her with him. These two entities in, some fashion, live within Feren together. As an elfling, Feren was fairly non-verbal. Though he is treated well in the confines of the Maydove Manor, he struggles to connect with anyone directly in his life, including his brother who he has no contact with.

Father Maydove would sometimes treat Feren normally, kindly, teaching him the blessings of his mother/fallen deity, and raising him to become the next gold dragon. Feren didn't often understand what this entailed, but it stressed him out nonetheless. The idea of filling a lesser deity's shoes was a lot for the young boy, and it followed him into adulthood. During his father's "corrupted" periods, however, Feren would be treated passive-aggressively, Florence using underhanded comments to make Feren feel inferior and uncomfortable. He often expresses his disappointment in Feren's less-than-average magic ability, because, well, he expects more from the future heir. He feeds him lie after lie about the reformed Almarith family, despite all remaining members being prosperous and kind. Feren begins to fear them and consider them his family's mortal enemies, and sees various family members as demons in his nightmares.

Eventually, Feren moves in with Felix on the ranch outside of Lunar Crest. Father Maydove allowed this during one of his "clear" moments, and Feren slowly opens up to his brother as time goes on. It takes time, as Feren fears Felix left him alone with their unstable father on purpose. Feren checks in regularly with his father, as he is still under his word - Florence asks that if he wants to keep living with Felix, he must hone his magical ability with a Sage in relation to the Almariths, and of him to keep intel on the Almarith family while he is training within their proximity. This worries Feren deeply, being afraid of them already, but he accepts. He has to get stronger. He has to be better.

Present

He begins taking magic lessons with Silas the Sage, meeting Cedric and eventually Aarundel, thus meeting the Almarith family formally. Feren, conflicted, thinks they are incredibly generous and fun individuals, and is now torn between the things his father has warned him and the unfamiliar kindness the kings and prince show him. Despite expressing this to his father, he continues to believe they have not changed. Feren becomes terribly frustrated with the situation, Mal being the only one he thinks he can turn to for a supposed "neutral" opinion on the matter. (Despite Mal being the creature in control of his father half the time).

Feren becomes desperate and bitter. Loving the company of the Almarith family, as they treat him practically like family after meeting them. Aarundel teases him, insults him, but malice never coats his words. Bad with communication, bad with confrontation, Feren festers while Mal encourages him to take his power, and he could help him make this all better. If Feren accepted the benevolent power, surely he could convince his father he's good enough to take the place of his mother one day, and that he can comfortably give up on his Almarith grudge... and of course, without anywhere else to turn, Feren accepts.

Trivia

  • He has many obscure fears. Some of these include: creatures taller than 6ft, holes in the ground, bodies of water, and dying stars. He's also afraid of fighting and pain in general.
  • He's extremely gullible and easy to trick; you could talk him into anything with enough praise and peer pressure.
  • Though rude and full of outbursts, he doesn't ever intend any harm toward others, especially animals.
  • His glasses are fake, he wears them to look smarter.
  • It's difficult carrying the weight of two deities.

Relationships

Aarundel [ rival / friend / crush ]

When they first met, Feren announced loudly that Aarundel is his sworn rival and enemy, predestined by the moon and stars. Aarundel simply laughs and says, "they never told ME anything about a sworn enemy". From then on, Feren is continuously rivaled by Aarundel's wittiness, and finds himself at a loss as to how to handle the situation. Eventually, Feren begins to see Aarundel for who he is - a kind soul who would do anything to keep his kingdom and his family safe. Not adding up to what his father told him about the Almarith family, Feren becomes frustrated because he likes the creature he was supposedly sworn against. Despite it all, they become close as ever, and Aarundel is found often tutoring Feren in magic.

Cedric [ friend ]

Feren occasionally comes to him, vulnerable, embarrassed, in search of advice. Cedric insists he's not much help, but just being around him makes Feren feel more comfortable. Though Feren is typically standoffish and rude, he just can't bring himself to snap at Cedric.

Felix [ big brother ]

Despite not seeing Felix at all during his youth, Feren begins living with Felix to be closer to Silas the Sage, his magic tutor. They have a rather strained relationship due to various unaddressed familial issues, but Felix insists that he cares deeply for his little brother, always trying to look out for him and bestowing him gifts, such as farm animal pets (a chicken named Penny who Feren adores).

Mal [ pactbound ]

During his childhood, Mal was simply a shadow in the corner of his room that spoke to him occasionally. Throughout his life, he formed a sort of bond with the creature, and Mal slowly gained his trust. Mal was kinder to him than everyone else in his life and conditioned him perfectly to bend to his will. Feren, vulnerable and frustrated, accepts a pact with Mal in order to gain the strength and wisdom he needs to solve his family's feud. This may not end well.

Florence [ father ]

Feren follows his father's orders out of obligation and partly out of the love he still has for him. Father Maydove is not inherently harsh with Feren, often speaking to him gently, and they were very close when Feren was younger. He believed every word his father said as an elfling, heavily influencing his mindset to this day. Whether some of those words were spoken in moments of clarity, or while Mal still had hold over Florence's mind, is unknown.
