Affinity with magical energy
From the moment Koi was born, he had an affinity for magic and magical energy- despite not being a witch or warlock. Unbeknownst to him, he’s drawn to it, which can sometimes lead to some unfortunate situations.
Swimming
Despite not being directly related to any water-based beings, Koi learned how to swim at a very young age, and only got better at it throughout his life- even more so once he stumbled onto Kailani’s beach and began living there.
Making friends/allies
Being naturally kind, energetic, and social, Koi is understandably quite amazing at making friends and allies. He’s very social, and even after being tied to the beach with Kailani, he continues to speak to almost each and every being who stumbles upon the beach- doing his best to make them all feel comfortable there.
Artistic
Though he doesn’t show it much, Koi is very creative and artistic. He is blown away by the many different skills and talents of others, and finds inspiration for drawing in the world’s many wonders.

Living Fish Tank Stomach

After being attacked one day, Koi was left bleeding out on the beach from a large wound on his stomach. Kailani didn’t have much time to save him and had to use part of the energy/magic from the beach itself to save him. This led to his stomach being replaced by a living unbreakable-glass fish tank. His rib bones can be seen inside, along with a number of unrealistically bright-colored fish. These aren’t actual fish and are more a representation of Koi’s life-essence itself.
Summary
While not a magician or a warlock, Koi has always had an instinctual affinity with magical energy. He’s drawn to it, unbeknownst to him, which has landed him in some unfortunate situations…
After a chance encounter with a dark magical being, Koi almost died from blood loss due to the large wound on his stomach. He barely managed to stumble out of the area, his legs giving out on him the moment his hooves hit the sandy ground of the beach. Bleeding out onto the sand, unable to do anything after than wait for death to take him, he focused solely on the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore- a faint smile on his muzzle as he attempted to find joy in his final moments. Just before he lost consciousness, however, he could hear the faint sound of hoofbeats against the sand, growing louder as he let out what he thought would be his last breath…
He was surprised to wake up an undetermined amount of time later, unable to feel the pain…or even the presence of his stomach at all. His attention shifted to the vibrant mare in front of him, who was smiling at him apologetically while her eyes glimmered, water from the sea filling up a hole before his very eyes.
“I’d like to apologize in advance before I explain any further. There wasn’t anything else I could do by the time I found you…I had to think quickly before death could steal you away. You’re too young- too full of life to lose it so soon.”
Learning of the magic the mare, Kailani, had to use to save his life and how it transformed his wounded stomach into a living glass fish tank…well, it was as overwhelming and shocking as it sounds. But even after only having a minute to process it, Koi thanked Kailani sincerely, making a vow to stay beside her and help her with her duties on the beach- the environment his physical form was now tied to for the rest of his (unnaturally extended) life. Now, he spends his days keeping Kailani company, the two forming a kinship with one another rather quickly despite their different personalities…
OC History
I received Koi from a giveaway hosted by @ solis-oculus, who created his design herself. I entered just for the fun of it, and was overjoyed to have won him! From the moment I created the ‘Beach of Fantasy’ alongside the Arcadia-Barlowe Storyline, I knew I had to add Koi to it! He fit into the story perfectly as a foil to the more serious and stoic Kailani.

Kailani
[ Friend ]
Kailani saved Koi’s life back when he stumbled onto the beach, bleeding out and almost unconscious. He is now tied to the beach itself, though he doesn’t mind that much at all. He follows Kailani around, helping her with her duties. She listens to his rambles and answers all of his questions with an undying patience that Koi appreciates more than anything. He knows that she isn’t as social and talkative as he is, and that his ramblings must be quite a lot sometimes. Due to this, he does his best to handle/help anyone who stumbles upon the beach– asking the questions he knows Kailani would usually need to know before he fetches her for their guests, hoping that it will make the socialization easier for her. He is in awe of the more serious matters that she handles, and only hopes he can be as much help as possible…both in thanks for saving him, and in an attempt to lessen the weight on her shoulders.
Percy
[ Unknown ]
Due to Percy being a merfolk who lives solely underwater, Koi has never met him. But he’s heard about him from Kailani- mostly in the annoyed and frustrated curses she mutters under her breath. She hates him, that much it clear. It doesn’t seem to be anything personal, and Koi figures that this ‘Percy’ must be someone truly rude or unreasonable for Kailani to hate him…especially with the patience Kailani has shown with him.
