She was born at the Elven Alienage in Denerim. Her mother, a runaway apostate, died while giving birth, and her father after the death of his wife, killed himself. Cate was taken in the orphanage of the Alienage almost as soon as she was born. There was almost no chance of her to survive, but she did. With time, she bonded with Themis, a young elven girl who treated her like her little sister and helped the orphanage when she could. Cate didn't get along with a lot of the children there, and would always be found alone or chasing Themis and her cousins around.

At age of 10 she assisted at Themis' wedding (even though it didn't start at all nor finish) and saw her depart with a Grey Warden called Duncan. After a few weeks passed, she awoke her magic by accident. A human (whom later she would discover was a Tevinter slaver) was threatening her caretaker. She electrocuted the guy out of rage and fear and knocked him out. The elder woman then warned her that they were going to come after her, and urged her to run away from Denerim. She refused, and shortly, more men came to the place. Her caretaker hid her and confronted them, as they demanded she gave them the child because a mage couldn't live outside The Circle. It was obviously a lie, so her caretaker played dumb. It costed her her and the children’s life that were around. Cate, who couldn't keep watching, ran away. She wandered around, dodging darkspawn as well as she could until she reached the Brecilian Forest, where a Dalish clan took her in.

Cate shut herself in and never talked with any other elf until Themis and her group found the clan and asked for help in the Blight. She was so happy she was alive. The older girl introduced her to his twin brother, a human that looked like her grandmother and another human who looked at Themis really fondly. She liked them. Then Cate demanded to go with her wherever she needed to go, but Themis refused. However, after dealing with the clan's problems with the werewolves, she promised to return and live with her when the Blight ended.

(DARKSPAWN QUEEN ENDING) - When only Alistair, the human that liked her big sister, returned, she knew something was wrong. She cried a lot when she found out she died killing the archdemon but accepted to travel around Thedas with Alistair, whom she had learned to care about as a big brother and Themis' husband (although Alistair always laughed sadly when she called him that and told her they never got married).

She travelled along with Alistair for three years across Ferelden, Orlais, and the Free Marches. At this point, Cate changed her name and adopted the name Hecate, as an act of love for her deceased sister, as Hecate was her favourite ancestor. They both bonded a lot and acted like siblings. With Alistair’s help, she controlled her magic fairly well, specializing in electric magic. At the age of 16, when they were going through the Free Marches, they stumbled upon a Dalish Clan, the Lavellan Clan. Alistair, much to Hecate’s disgust, left her at their care as he thought they would keep her safe. He didn't want her to be a Grey Warden nor to catch the Blight or get hurt because of his work. They promised to keep in touch and they got apart. Hecate never got along with the clan.

With the Inquisition

She had a lot of close calls after getting imprisoned by Cassandra, as she wouldn't just shut up. Shortly, she recognized Leliana, and as the woman felt a sense of debt to Themis, she tried everything she could so Hecate wouldn't be executed. After reinstalling the Inquisition, they all noticed she had what it took to be a leader, and promptly became the Inquisitor at SKyhold. Being as flirty as she is, Dorian and her became great friends in no time. Sera too, as she opened up the world of pranks for Hecate again. For the first time in like, ever, her flirty remarks got taken seriously by Iron Bull, which led to. Well. That. Shortly after, she reencountered with Alistair, and then Themis, which she tried to reunite too again. It didn't go very well, as their relationship got damaged by 10 years apart, even if Themis' feelings didnt change at all. After Corypheus they tried living peacefully. And it havent played the dlc yet so that's that!
