Iona was born to parents who only met once and never again. Her mother was a flower nymph who wasn't sure how to take care of a banshee child and when she heard the rumors of Bo, the banshee caretaker, she grew resolved for what she must do. Lacking the ability to care for her daughter, she begged for the mysterious man to take care of her daugter where she could not, and while he was initally unsure, she eventually won his favor. Iona's mother hopes to see her again someday, but knows that she can't care for her now.

Iona and her adopted siblings haven't been told that she was the only one of them to be given to Bo with the express purpose of raising them. Bo didn't want to accidentally create a superiority complex in the older children, or cause for Iona to wonder why she was given to someone else to raise, something only her mother could answer. She's being raised to live in the woods and care for herself in the wild with the expectation that nobody else will be able to care for her the same way. However, already at her young age it's obvious that Iona doesn't easily follow the startard banshee social structure, which could cause her discomfort when trying to live under them. Bo is concerned that she may be the first kid that he pushes away from the nomadic lifestyle, and into civilization.

Now, when the adopted family are living within a city, Iona is finding herself growing more and more restless with how they are made to hide from the world, and is making plans to make her mark on the world around her. She wants to meet her neighbors, go to a farmer's market, go to a school-- have something to do that isn't inside or on the roof of their cramped apartment.
