A wandering ronin with a wild streak, former kabuki actor upon Hinode's flowering stage. Wataru is now mostly known for being a tattooed swordsman who prefers to never draw his blade, as well as a literal party animal. Some days, he's a man. Other days, he's a tanuki.
A loud, colorful character who might be a little rough around the edges and lacking a few common human mannerisms. Wataru's heart, however, means the best for those he finds himself with, though his support (and volume) can be a little over-enthusiastic.
Don't mistake his casual attitude for complacency, however - despite how he acts, the man is a seasoned warrior bearing strange skills and abilities that appear foreign to the landscape of modern Hinode.

Was apparently sealed into the underside of the Yata-no-Kagami, one of Hinode's Three Sacred Treasures inherited from the gods of Takamagahara. He was released by accident by the young heir of the Yakumo Grand Shrine, a boy named Kannagi Hirai, when a strange horned creature attacked him in an attempt to steal the mirror. By using the curious abilities of the Yata-no-Kagami, Hirai was able to transport both himself and Wataru away from harm, though the mirror was badly damaged in the struggle. Wataru considers Hirai his savior, and has sworn loyalty to protect him until they are able to return back to their realm.
At present, nothing else is known about Wataru's past besides the nickname "Painted Demon".
Wataru's beloved waka (young master). Hirai freed him when they first met, saving his life even if by chance. Victims of the same accident, Wataru swears a loyalty to the awkward, reticent musician until he is ready to tread the shores of Hinode once more.
The blue oni to Wataru's red oni. Though sometimes annoyed at Kagaya's presence taking up space on Hirai's other side, Wataru sees him as an equal. The result is a tendency to pick on the man, while still being genuinely concerned for his wellbeing.
A strange girl whose flair Wataru finds himself attracted to. As fellow folk from the countryside, he gets along well with her as another warrior on the frontlines. Her heritage and story intrigues him, as what seems to be a fellow victim of oni-henge.
Hirai's fiance, and someone Wataru is trying to get to know much better. While trying to understand the truth behind Yuzuriha's abilities, he hopes to encourage her to mend her relationship with Hirai.
