Ran so far from India due to being caught funding a small-scale rebellion against British rule in her mid 20s and not wanting to go to prison. Said money came from fraud. Which was fairly easy for her commit as she was a moneylender at the time. While of course there were more close by places then the other side of the world she could have hid, she was very paranoid at the time about being found.

As she had already spent a fair amount of her spare time experimenting with makeup and altering clothing in privite, Shalini was fairly well equipped to make those things into a career at Maxwell's Circus of Merriment once she found herself in the US. Makeup is her focus though. Her generally aloof nature alongside a lack of enjoyment for small talk has lead to a fair few of her coworkers considering her a snob.
