About

CONTENT WARNING: Assisted Suicide, manipulation, and romanticization of death, read at your own discretion.

An NPC for my current lancer campaign. Aconite is the recently deceased spouse of Euryale, a player character, and has left his title, wealth, and noble duties to her in preparation for his death.

After meeting Euryale the two soon started a romantic relationship, one where they mutually used each other, Aconite for a good while saw Euryale as a parasite, obviously kissing up to them because of their noble status, and used her as a means of pissing off their family. As if Aconite decided to go through their teenage rebellion a few years too late for it to be reasonable. Their family would have to learn to put up with commoners better or simply be monstrously pissed off for the time they chose to spend with Euryale, both options worked for Aconite. At some point though, genuine feelings developed on both their parts, Aconite got to experience little things like home cooked meals with Euryale's family, learning how to bargain at the marketplace and avoid getting scammed, and having a companion they could speak freely around. Even if these moments and gestures of affection were hollow and void of sincerity, Aconite couldn't deny how warm it made them feel. Even if they thought Euryale was using them, they couldn't bring themself to resent her for it. Especially knowing she was using Euryale herself, and it wouldn't be wrong to say she liked how far Euryale was willing to go to stay in her good graces.

In a mix of what was perhaps the ultimate test of just how far they could push her, their growing anxiety of not knowing when and where their death would find them as their illness continued to worsen, and the utter dread of having to see the front lines of combat as the worldtree expedition date drew near, Aconite asked Euryale to kill them. It'd be a lovely thing, wouldn't it? Dying in the arms of the person you love as the morning sun broke. Seeing it coming and being not only prepared but at peace with it. And Euryale would be well cared for in the event of their death too, after all, they'd leave her absolutely everything they were entitled to as the next of their family, after all even a branch house could access more luxury than most commoner families could ever dream of right? As their vision fades out and they feel something wet on their cheek though, they wonder....Was this really the right choice?

Aconite is perhaps given a pseudo second chance at life as an autonomous mech known only as "Gorgon" assists Euryale from the shadows. A hazy video feed of their form implying that there may yet be traces of their existence somewhere in this world.

Trivia

Had they lived long enough to see the events of the worldtree campaign, they still would've asked Euryale to go in their place. The thought of combat terrifies them even if it's a snipers job to stay in the backlines.

Envies Euryale's close relationship with her sisters but still only makes minimal effort to reach out to their own sibling Larkspur.

Lovely themesong composed by my wonderful friend june who i owe my life.
