Profile

RH88

Unlicensed ghost therapist, part-time cryptic VHS video creator, full-time anthropomorphic rabbit owner.

  • Name RH88, or just 88
  • Nickname Eightball, Eighty, "smiley freak"
  • Age 17, allegedly
  • Gender Unaligned nonbinary, AMAB
  • Pronouns Smile/smiles
  • Sexuality Questioning/deems it unimportant
  • Ethnicity Hispanic
  • Occupation "Ghost therapist", or rather a very involved medium
  • Residence An abandoned shed in the woods
  • Religion Believes wholly in supernaturality, but nothing else
  • MBTI ENFP-T
  • Alignment Chaotic Good
  • Positive Traits Alert, playful, sentimental, courteous, extroverted
  • Negative Traits Insecure, irresponsible, childish, stubborn, morbid
  • Outlook Life is just odd to smile. 88 is far more interested in afterlife, considering it is smiles very purpose to focus on it.
  • Belief Do the best you can for those around you. Death is inevitable and trying to prevent it is a fool's errand, worthy of mockery.
  • Strengths Despite smiles... unstable mental state, smile is rather amiable and convinced everyone is smiles friend until proven otherwise. While disconcerting at times, smile has smiles ways of getting people to open up. It is in smiles job description, after all. If smiles charge is uncooperative, well, smile will just continue to not shut up.
  • Weaknesses Smile is very reclusive outside of smiles work, devotng most of smiles time to it. 88 completely ignores as many of smiles needs as smile can out of pure stubbornness (which tends to be smiles downfall in many other places), conviction that smile doesn't need to tend to the body that only exists to house a gift. It's honestly a miracle smile isn't dead.
"You can't remember where you came from, / you can't remember where you're going, / you can't remember knowing."

88 is a very... strange fellow. Smile is soft-spoken, at almost all times speaking in merry, slow sing-song. At times smile can be hard to understand, mostly because of smiles odd way of speaking—smile ignores most grammatical rules, makes up words, generally just shows only a slight understanding of English. This is purposeful. Smile is childish and playful, sentimental for others and stubborn to a fault to any ends. 88 loves most things in this world, even if living humans tend to get on smiles nerves

Smile is also particularly ruthless. Most of the time not in the sort of evil way the word's associated with, no, smile just sees A to B and stops at nothing to accomplish whatever task smile has set out to do. Whether that be taking out someone a charge can't move on because of, or simply returning a beloved item, 88 is determined and willing to do anything. It's easy to forget that if you're particularly friendly with smile—smile is very professional and secretive about what smile does for smiles charges.

At the end of the day, smile is just very caring. Very selfless. It's smiles entire purpose in life to help the dead, and smile has internalized that maybe a little more than is healthy, a tad to the point where smile has begun to doubt that smile should really be doing everything smile does so blindly, unquestioningly. Mixed with smiles guilt over those smile has been unable to assist, there's a nice layer of insecurity that not a soul in the world has witnessed yet. Smile is professional, secretive, after all.

Likes

  • Bright colors, particularly yellow
  • Rabbits
  • Arts'n'crafts
  • Making "home videos"
  • Scrapbooking
  • Walking around the woods aimlessly

Dislikes

  • Doubt—being doubted, having doubts, the uncertainty of that scares smile
  • The cold
  • Loud sounds, particularly thunder
  • Salt and bleach. Yes, smile is intensely superstitious and firmly believes salt is capable of exorcising spirits. Same with bleach
  • Supernatural skeptics
  • Being indoors for too long

  • Various crafts, mostly origami and sewing
  • Scrapbooking
  • Wandering around towns looking for Trinkets and Rocks
  • Urban exploration
  • Playing arcade machines
  • Unknowingly standing in really ominous spots and scaring the locals

Skills

  • Fairly good with research, though this lies more in tracking down physical documents and other sources
  • A swift assassin with a flair for dramatics. Prefers fire or, more intimately, a trusty baseball bat when it comes to dispatching people

Trivia

  • Hasn't lived in a house since smile fled Colorado. 88 genuinely considered squatting in an apartment and then decided smile needed to be outside for smiles own sanity. The abandonded shed is moreso a base of operations than it is a home.
  • Spends most of smiles time in the 1985pit, if 88 isn't checking on charges, for no discernable reason besides the arcade and people-watching.
  • Griffin had a rather long history with pickpocketing people more out of kleptomania than legitimate need, and for some reason this has carried over to 88. On the rare occassion smile is around people, smile is absolutely going to steal something and then not have anything to do with it besides go to the dry cleaners or something.
  • As much as 88 likes nature, it... does not like smile. Most animals are disturbed by smiles presence, which makes 88 incredibly sad.
  • Always has a camera on hand, usually around smiles neck and hidden under smiles sweater. While smile doesn't make most of smiles VHS videos for fun, smile does like collecting B-roll.
  • Absolutely adores ghost stories—anything concerning the living dead enthralls smile. Usually the more begnin, happier stories are favorites, even if smile can only find those when they're aimed at younger audiences to smiles dismay. Gordon Korman's Whatshisface is smiles favorite, seconded by Dial-a-Ghost by Eva Ibbotson.

Abilities

  • 88 has both the ability, as a living person, to see remnant—and also an inexplicable sort of Ghost Vision, which is about all that entails. If something's haunted, 88 can see its spirit and usually via weird imagery. Comes with the unfortunate side effect of smile is not supposed to be seeing any of this, so it very much puts enough strain on smiles eyes that if smile were to look at a ghost for longer than, say, half an hour without breaks smile could end up blind.
  • Alongside that, 88 has a more straightforward, less dangerous version of What Happens When You Put Remnant in Your Mouth Like an Idiot, basically just mindreading but only for the dead. This is only possible through skin contact, and completely uncontrollable, so 88 takes care to cover all of smiles skin. It tends to be very draining for smile, because while it's safer than Sticking Remnant in Your Mouth Like an Idiot and not as intensely painful, it's still not great.

Favorites

  • Favorite animal? Rabbits!
  • Favorite song/music genre? Big And Loud Pt. 2 from Cats Don't Dance. Would love hyperpop if anyone ever introduced it to smile.
  • Favorite movie/movie genre? Saw. Into thrillers and psychological horrors, and utterly adores any films that tackle ghosts. Yes, even Ghostbusters. Smile perceives it as a really sad movie.
  • Favorite food? Hates eating all around. Loves carrots, though, so that's something.
  • Favorite season? Winter! Snow's awesome. The fact that it's freezing isn't, but snow is cool enough to ignore that.
  • Favorite holiday? Halloween. The one day a year smile can, like, exist in a public space and nobody will think smile is weird.

A brunette with half-yellow dyed hair, always wearing a yellow smiley-face mask adorned with four red hearts near its lips. Keeps dark gloves and undershirt on at all times. Smile wears a yellow sweater with bloodstain patches on the left, and an actual bloodstain where smile is missing smiles right arm. The left arm has been sewn on, and is a rainbow up to blue with a white cuff. There are two claw-mark shaped patches on the front of the sweater, one pink and the other blue. It wears simple dark leggings and winter boots. Smile is on the taller side, though looks very disproportionate from smiles height's contrast with smiles naturally stocky but starvation-wracked frame.

Design Notes

  • The mask never comes off—if it does, smiles face is obscured in some other way, usually.
  • Skin is absolutely never visible.
  • Only wears bright, eyestrain-y colors and generally comfortable clothes.

Backstory

Before 88 was... 88, smile was someone named Griffin Nelson. He was a curious, extroverted, and very impulsive kid who loved bugs and could stare at a singular tree for five hours straight. He was a momma's boy with no shame about it, wore an eyepatch because he thought it was cool, went into a half-dramatic mourning period whenever one of his Tamogotchis went and died. He had a single friend named Stephanie Locke, an ex-urban explorer with a love for fashion and an almost dealbreaking fear of insects. They liked to call themseslves the picture-perfect coming of age duo.

On Griffin's 17th birthday, the pair decided to break into the local temporarily closed Freddy Fazbear's to party, a risky bit of fun after they had scouted out the building the day before. But as they're leaving, an animatronic—Dixie the chick, ironically, her favorite one—recognized Stephanie as a criminal and violently assaulted her, smashing her head against the floor until it's a gory pulp. Griffin, horrified, ran away while she was still able to and very much screaming for help, making for another exit.

He was cut off by Benny, the bunny, and instead of being mercilessly killed as well, it instead put an empty Freddy head on him—which Griffin came to learn in the next minute was very possessed as the spirit inside attempts to possess him instead. It failed at first, but a significant amount of remnant got in his mouth in the process, the effects of which leave him utterly defenseless and in an ungodly amount of pain. Still, Griffin pressed on, very nearly making it to the exit in the office before Benny and Dixie find him, swiftly restraining him and putting the head back on. The spirit in the head successfully possessed him without his ability to interfere, and he passed out on the spot.

Griffin woke up the next morning, seemingly fine—aside from the fact that he could see ghosts now, a side effect of him unquestoningly swallowing remnant several times the night before. The next week is uncannily normal, aside from his grieving and guilt over abandoning Stephanie. Exactly a week after his birthday, Griffin picked up the shirt he was wearing on their first outing, still dripping with remnant. Against everything he'd learned on that night, he licked it off his fingers after touching it. The effects of doing so—the pain, the seizing—allowed the spirit from the head to attempt to take over.

It attempted to speak, though its lack of full possession only got it as far as absolutely decimating Griffin's larynx and lungs—and the overload of it all in that moment just went in the way many supernatural things do, horribly, and wiped his mind completely clean. Total amnesia. Nigh unrecoverable because of its origins, not that anyone would know that.

And that is where 88 comes in.

Present Day

88 does not remember Griffin Nelson. Smile does occasionally recall things with the right prompting, usually insignificant and concerning his only friend—but smile doesn't really... care. For all intents and purposes, smile was spawned into the world with the desperate whispers of a spirit as smiles only memory, and smile dedicated smiles entire existence to saving people smile had not even known at the time, and likely never will. Smile fled smiles home state as soon as smile could, leaving it all behind. 88 is not Griffin, and yet at the same time smile is. It's confusing. It's not something 88 is concerned with at all.

...and now for a placeholder as I debate actually putting the rest of the Present™ stuff in here.

Name: Gabriella

Time known each other: About 4 years

88 is on relatively good terms with Gabi. Smile was rightfully upset over her (unintentionally) smashing smiles arm into a bloody pulp, but she's kind of one of the only living people smile likes regardless. Fair's fair, what's a little dismemberment between bestest friends?

Name: Butch

Time known each other: About 4 years

While smile does like Butch, smile is definitely aware of how cautious he is around smile. After Ball Pit Hell, smile frankly doesn't blame him—88 is cautious with him, too, but they do get along well enough.
