ABILITY: TRUE SIGHT

This ability manifested due to a paranormal parasite that currently resides dormant in his optic nerve (previously retina), which awakens sometimes to further infect the rest of his head/body.
The parasite utilizes the vibration of energy - electrical, biological, and ambient - to create a 360 degree visual field. Invisible objects and objects in the dark that are not normally seen by normal sight are detected by this ability. Up close objects are clearly defined, objects further away are blurry. Things that are stationary are not seeable/harder to see. For example, he cannot read a book normally unless there is a lot of vibration around.

Range:
0-10m - Can see with perfect clarity/detail, better than normal sight
10-20m - Can see what normal humans see
20-30m - Blurry
30m+ - Blind

Pros:
- Unaffected by invisibility and darkness
- Unaffected by visual interference eg. tear gas
- Can sense past walls if enough energy able to pass through walls

Cons:
- No colour vision
- Can’t read unless enough vibration
- Can cause headaches when a lot of stimuli around

Helicopter piloting
Vehicle repair and maintenance
Outdoor survival/camp skills (navigation, how to find sources of water)

PERSONALITY

friendly | compassionate | calm | persevering | co-operative | distractible

Naturally optimistic and happy, it's usual tendency to at least show an optimistic exterior even during bad times. He has quite strong mental endurance which stems from being able to look forward and hope for something better. His social and personal relationships are important to him and part of how he copes. Sometimes his natural optimism overtakes him and he can lose sense of when he's upset or really unhappy, having it shoved back into the darkness of his unconsciousness until it booms out in a vulnerable moment.
He's generally patient and doesn't get aggressive or angry easily. It's rare for him to raise his voice. He prefers conciliation over conflict, without being meek or submissive. Simply, his first goal is to calm the fires, sometimes in dangerous situations as per the nature of his work, in can push the boundaries of when you should continue peace or fight to kill.
Having grown up around lots of people, he often likes to have company, whether it's someone he knows or someone new to meet. He gets lonely easily. He is quite sensitive to how others are feeling, and is that kind of friend to always check up on how they're feeling, or if they're enjoying themselves etc. He brushes off hostility rather well, thanks to his own sense of self-ease. In relation to people, he is also not above gossiping and is not the best at keeping secrets, not that he likes giving away secrets specifically, but telling everything to anyone is just kinda his thing.
He has a strong ability to stay calm under pressure, an important skill for his occupation. Additionally, he makes a co-operative team member. He has quite different work and out-of-work attitudes, being more contained on the job, and then more bouncy and excitable during free time.
He gets distracted rather easily, jumping from task to that, like he always has to be doing something different.

BACKSTORY

Samyr grew up and lived in the outer suburbs of Sydney, Australia all up until he finished his own tertiary studies. He had quite bad asthma, which the doctor said was probably just a childhood thing that would wear off, but it was pretty persistent and his parents were worried that he was having to use his puffer multiple times a week. He otherwise had little other health issues. The family lived in a very modest house, close to where his grandparents (on his father's side) lived, whom they visited regularly. Often, when both his parents were busy, and couldn’t be home, he would simply be dropped off at his grandparents’ place to be baby-sitted(..sat?); kind of like having a second set of parents, except this second set of parents doted on him immensely and had a tendency to spoil him way too much (which he understood and made sure to take advantage of). He also had many relatives he saw a lot, so overall he got to know his extended family rather well, and had gotten used to being with different people. His close relations with his cousins often made him forget he didn't actually have any siblings of his own. He holds his family, including extended, very close to his heart, and is part of the network that he draws support from, emotional and otherwise.
One particular summer when Samyr was 5, some relatives of his were going on a camping trip (“camping” trip; it was a little into the woods somewhere, but in cabins), and invited him and the family to come along. After managing to convince his grandparents that there were no bears in the area (also they were keen to get their little grandchild to stay with them instead for the summer), it was decided that Samyr and his parents were joining the camping trip. A long drive out, and they reached the site; a cabin on hill, overlooking some nice scenery, plus some other fun things around, like an obstacle course. Little Samyr was playing with a soccer ball with one of his cousins, just a little older than him. Dusk had settled, and it was getting dim. The ball rolled down the hill, and they chased it all the way, seeing it fall into a small lake. It floated just out of reach of any stick they tried to use to pull it back over to them, and neither had learnt how to properly swim yet, so his cousin promptly ran back up to get an adult to help, telling Samyr to wait. And yes he did not wait and waded into the lake instead (well, the ball seemed to be drifting closer so it was rather tempting). Just before he could reach the ball, there was a deep drop in the lake bed, and in a bit of a tangle, he fell into the deep water. He struggled for what felt like a long time, but strong arms suddenly pulled him up and dragged the coughing child back to the lake side; it was his uncle whom was just coming down when he saw Samyr disappear under the water. In the end, everyone was just very relieved he was still alive; the ball was retrieved, and his parents gave him a lecture on safety.

Curiously, he was apparently completely cured of his asthma as he never had another asthma attack since that. There was no lake to be seen when they revisited it the next day – just your average bunch of trees and bark everywhere.

The very next year of the camping trip, Samyr started to go to school. At first, his parents were the ones to drive him there, but after making some friends there he could travel with, he learnt to take public transport himself. In general, he enjoyed his primary school life; he was one of those kids who spent most of their time running around playing tag, or joining in some other groups to play cricket. He learnt how to swim, and ride a bike, and, during the later years, he got to start learning French. In one particular week, he fell over and scraped his knees three times. His parents made him wear knee pads for the rest of the month, but he didn't fall over again (well, not until much later at least). During the middle of his time in primary school, his parents decide to move houses to somewhere closer to the city, and closer to where many high schools were, thus making commuting around for work and school easier for the whole family. He still visited his grandparents a lot, and often stayed with them for some time over holiday periods, which also provided him with opportunities to see his old primary school friends again.
At high school, Samyr was quite active; both in the sport-sense, and in that he liked participating in the different activities the school had to offer, such as the school play. He continued with his French studies all the way as one of final exam subjects. His ability occasionally caused him some trouble, such as when doing portrait photography assignments, though mostly people would brush it off has him being weird or just being really genuinely bad at the task. On the other hand, his ability may have also helped in pushing him to be active in sport and extra-curriculars, since watching live action tv shows and movies like other kids did wasn't so fun for him so he didn't spend too much time on those. That saying, a good anime series never stopped him from having fun.
Career-wise, he knew he was going to do something health-related; after graduating from high school, he took up studying paramedical science, before starting his training to become a qualified paramedic. It was fortunate he appeared to be more like his mother in being sure about his career pathway rather than jumping around like his father. Being a paramedic was pretty tough, he would say; there would be late nights, aggressive patients, and in general keeping up with the study load, but he really felt it was the job for him, so he was pretty devoted. He had to come to terms with the tragic world and inevitable death. Sounds depressing, but he's resilient and feels he is fulfilling his purpose with his role. Additionally, it was when he was studying at university that he met his first girlfriend. Originally, they were just friends with many interests in common, but grew closer and start dating. She was an outgoing, outspoken kind of person, and they went through many things together, like when Samyr's grandfather passed away. After graduating, the gradually drifted apart; they felt like they had each changed a lot, and didn't really seem to click in the same way as before. Consequently, they broke up after around three years of being together. At some point after he completed his training, proving himself to be a proficient student, he ended up sending in an application to some sort of organisation recruiting paramedics for their special operations team; just some "search and rescue" type work. It seemed like something he was up for, and would enjoy. More than that though, he was called in for an interview and instead given an invitation to join Sigma as one of the medical personnel. Evidently, he joined.

In summary enemies are fought, mysterious are solved and all that. Samyr somehow survives. He gets along with many of his colleagues and have fun times! He continued to expand his medical knowledge while working for Sigma to learning forensics and how to autopsy.

He began seeing things out of the corner of his eye, which was a bit odd but given that nothing else odd happened, didn't question it further. But then more odd stuff happened, like he would start having minor "hallucinations", seeing beings down the corridor that would disappear when he blinked or things crawling under his bed, so after considering poor sleep, drug effects, and PTSD dismissed as differentials with help from other medical staff, he was trialed on antipsychotics and referred to the PSY department to be investigated for paranormal causes possibly as a side effect from any recent previous missions. The antipsychotics mostly just gave him tired and he started to sleep a lot. All the while his hallucinations were getting longer lasting, and he was observed to sometimes forget what was real and what was not, having been in an increasing number of incidents of arming himself with a knife to defend himself from something or mumbling/yelling at nothing. He reported hearing things but it was underdetermined if here any true auditory hallucinations. This cumulated quickly to one day waking up to a room that was almost unrecognisable, heaving like it was alive, a feeling of inhabitation without seeing anything. He experienced a pain in his right eye and had the epiphany that something was living in him. Overwhelmed by panic and fear, he ran out and grabbed the first object he found, a screwdriver. He hesitated for a moment as he noticed something squirm and swim under the skin of his arms, scratching at it before just trying to end it all and attempting to gouge out his eyes. Fortunately, a colleague found him and restrained him before he haemorrhaged to death and he was taken off for intensive medical treatment. They couldn't salvage his eyes but he developed True Sight.
