Loner
Dice is a loner. He grew up in an abandoned barn with his brother, Boost, where they thrived hunting mice together. They defended their home from any threats and were happy to help cats in need, including Sulfur. He was aware of the Clans and based on stories he'd heard, saw them as bloodthirsty ruffians.
After Boost died of sickness, Dice spent seasons alone until he gave shelter to an abandoned housecat named Velvet. They fell in love and had three kits: Deserve, Boost, and Song.
Velvet was uncomfortable with the idea of hunting, so Dice was the breadwinner of his family. Though he was often tired and stressed, he was fully committed to his role and loved spending time with his family. He was very proud when Deserve learned to hunt.
One day, Dice is hit and killed by a car while trying to catch a turkey that would have fed the family for days.
In death, he ascends to an unknown afterlife.
Dice is a black and white tom with yellow eyes.
"We're a family, and nothing will ever separate us. Not thunder, not shadowy cats, not anything."
Dice is friendly, responsible barn cat. He's always willing to help a cat in need. Despite his kind nature, there have been times outsiders have tried to take the barn, and he won't back down from a fight to defend his home and family. He loves the barn and would never give it up.
He couldn't wait to be a father and show his kits all the wonderful things about life around the barn. After they were born, he felt life was perfect, and he and his family would always share the barn together.
He is fully committed his responsibility to provide for his family, and he'll stay up all night if he has to. Though he doesn't show it, it puts a lot of stress on him and he's always exhausted.

Boost is Dice's brother. They grew up in the barn together and enjoyed each others company. Dice thought his son's stripes looked similar to Boost's, so named him after him.
Velvet is Dice's mate. She was an abandoned kittypet who Dice offered shelter to. They ended up falling in love and having kits together. Though Velvet refused to participate in hunting, Dice never held any ill will against her and was more than happy to provide for her.
Deserve is Dice's son. Dice loved and was endlessly proud of his kits. When he wasn't hunting for them, he was playing with them in the barn and telling them stories. Deserve was the kit who realized the pressure his father was under to feed the family, and he wanted to learn to hunt to relieve some of that pressure, and be a great hunter just like him. Dice taught Deserve to hunt before he died and was very proud when he caught his first mouse.
Song is Dice's daughter. Dice loved and was endlessly proud of his kits. When he wasn't hunting for them, he was playing with them in the barn and telling them stories.

Saving Sulfur
When Sulfur is abandoned at the side of the road as a kit, Dice and Boost find him and nurse him back to health. When he was old enough to fend for himself, he left, but visited sometimes and told them about RiverClan cats he befriended. (Beyond the River, chapter 5, Deserve's Beginning, chapter 4)
He and Boost once ran into a group of Clan cats and barely made it back to the barn alive. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 2)
Losing Boost and Meeting Velvet
Boost dies of sickness, and Dice spends many seasons alone. Once in a while a cat comes by for food and shelter, and he's always willing to help. Twice an aggressive cat has challenged him for the barn, but he's fought them off, refusing to give up his home, though he gets lonely. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 1)
One winter, an abandoned housecat named Velvet comes across the barn, and Dice lets her stay and hunts for her until she recovers. Velvet enjoys his company and has no where else to go, so decides to stay with him. After a few moons, they fall in love. Velvet becomes pregnant with his kits. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 1)
A Father
Dice can't wait to be a father and show his kits all the wonderful things about life around the barn. He excitedly helps to deliver the kits. The stripes on the tabby kit remind him of his brother, Boost, so they select the name. Velvet names Song. The third kit expresses interest in the mouse Dice brought, and after joking about how he thinks he deserves it, Dice suggests the unique name Deserve. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 1)
Around the time the kits were born, Sulfur told Dice and Velvet that he was leaving the forest because there was too much bloodshed. He felt that he was in danger and urged them not to stray far from the barn, because there were evil cats here. They believed he meant the Clans, but it was really Bone Shreds Gang. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 4)
Dice spends a lot of time hunting to support his family, but always finds time to be with them in the barn. He enjoys seeing his kits play together and intends to show them how to hunt when they're old enough. (Deserve's Beginning)
Deserve sympathizes with his father, being the only cat working to provide for them. He begs Dice to each him, and after some hesitation, Dice agrees and successfully teaches him. He's shocked when Deserve figures out the killing bite on his own and is very proud of him as he catches his first mouse. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 5 and 6)
Death
The next day, Dice is about to show Boost and Song how to hunt when he spots a turkey by the thunderpath. Knowing it would feed his family for days and he could get some rest and spend more time with them, he begins persuing it, even as it heads onto the thunderpath. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 7)
Velvet warns him of the oncoming monster, but he's determined to try to catch the turkey, and as soon as he leaps for it, he's struck and killed by the monster. (Deserve's Beginning, chapter 7)

- When I decided to write Deserve's backstory, I didn't think much about the names of his family members. I didn't feel they really mattered. I very hastily made Dice, Velvet, Boost, and Song. His original story is similar, if not exact to the one seen in Deserve's Beginning. Dice was originally born in the abandoned barn and lived there his whole life. A passing kittypet named Velvet met him, and though she disliked hunting, she fell in love with Dice. She decided to give up her kittypet life to be with him and start a family. Originally, Dice's brother's name was Booster, but it was changed in Deserve's Beginning to Boost. In an early description, he is described as a white tom with black patches and yellow eyes.
