My she/they, demigirl sona, only instead of being a terrifying murder mannequin she’s… literally just a person. Jolyne is an important character in my shared Legends Arceus AU, and is self-indulgent on a level matching Dimitri’s same AU lore. Because I can.

First and foremost, Jolyne is just super fucking weird. It’s a mix of her natural self and trauma; she often speaks in non-sequiturs, or does things that seem crazy to others looking in from the outside, but Jolyne doesn’t let any sort of judgment change her. When you experience a technical death and the literal end of your world, not a lot tends to faze you. Still, she struggles with trauma responses, and has a lot of trouble fitting in. Even Jolyne can’t escape the pain that comes with feeling like an outsider. Though she is sweet and caring, she has very few friends-at least at first-and thus becomes rather attached to those who show her love. With said loved ones, Jolyne can get pretty goofy, and a lot of her attempts to make others laugh are a little forced… but she means well all the same. Her friends have their work cut out for them keeping her from getting into trouble caused by sheer obliviousness; Jolyne is prone to wandering off, not checking her surroundings, and falling into holes. Some of it is the haze caused by past trauma, but she’s always been at least a little spacey. She can also become extremely apathetic and detached, which is another trauma response; sometimes, Jolyne simply doesn’t have the capacity to care about anything, no matter how much she wants to. Keeping the care and trust of her friends in these times means the whole world to her.

Jolyne was not born in the world of Hisui, nor the world of the other fallers. She was separate from them, and lived in a universe where major events occurred opposite of what her fellow fallers experienced, though she had no way of knowing this. Being a normal trainer living her life, Jolyne had no way to predict the end of her world, either. She’d lived in Hoenn her entire life, and one day began to hear rumors and see news about some team of weirdos causing trouble, but as far as she knew someone had been stopping them. When the rains started, Jolyne didn’t think to connect them to what she’d heard. The rains poured heavily, and without end, until the seas began to rise and swallow up everything in its path. First went the island cities and towns, then those of the coast, until eventually even the mainland was not safe. Jolyne and her twin brother Jonathan attempted to find family left behind in the now evacuated Mauville only to be stopped by the intense floods, and deprived of all hope. It was then that the tsunami came. It was not just a mere wave, but a leviathan from the deep taken form. Jolyne could only watch in mute terror and awe as the water crashed down upon her. As the darkness overtook her existence, she swore she was dead.

Jolyne somehow, against all logic, survived her ordeal. She awoke in what she eventually learned was an entirely new world, one completely separated from her own. How this happened, Jolyne held no earthly idea, but she understood that her home was lost to her forever. Her family, her Pokemon, the places she knew-all gone. Knowing she was utterly alone, and clearly traumatized, Jolyne was taken in by the Diamond Clan. They were wary of outsiders, especially one of such dubious origins, but Jolyne’s earnest nature won many of the clan members over. She was particularly loved by children, as she had no issues getting along with them. The clan became special to her quickly, and though it couldn’t replace what she’d lost, Jolyne felt her new bonds had saved her. Even her newfound, intense phobia of water was accepted. One day, Jolyne was introduced to a special companion after completing her ritual for full clan membership: they were a Gastrodon, one specially trained by the warden Iscan to assist her with water travel and keep her from being hurt or drowned. Jolyne actually did cry during this. She was a stranger in a world that was not her own, alone after the death of all she’d cared for, and still there were people who loved her. It hurt, but not in a terrible way.

During the events of Legends Arceus, Jolyne is not center stage, but rather off hunting down Legendary Pokemon with her new besties, Frost and Ingo. Laventon had requested this of them to keep the faller trio from being overburdened, and she was more than happy to get an excuse to go out and travel. Even better, it sometimes gave her an excuse to talk to Irida, who was Jolyne’s age and very cute. There was one glaring issue, though, a problem she managed to put off for awhile but eventually had to face. One of the Legendaries, Manaphy, was an ocean Pokemon. Jolyne and oceans did not mix; her thalassophobia screamed bloody murder at the mere thought of approaching the Cobalt Coastlands. Yes, she had her beloved Gastrodon, but the two were yet to test how she fared in the ocean. Torn between helping her friends and avoiding the water that terrified her so, Jolyne reluctantly chose the former. It didn’t turn out so well. Her thrashing and panicking earned her another experience of drowning; only the quick actions of her Gastrodon, her friends, and then Lynn saved her life. This experience was a huge wake up call. Jolyne understood now that, while she could always avoid water, repressing the trauma and fear was only going to make her life worse. Eventually, she finally manages to tell her story to her friends, finally revealing-outside of the Diamond Clan, anyway-her secret of being from a world unknown to everyone but her.

Her later story is AU-within-AU dependent, but usually, Jolyne is forced to stay out of the banishment arc to prevent any trouble from falling onto her clan. She makes gifts for the protagonist trio as a way of offering support and care for the trials they were forced into, and is particularly attached to Lynn after being saved by her. If the trio and Ingo leave for their original world, Jolyne is extremely upset to see them go, especially her close friend.

  • Has severe aquaphobia and thalassophobia.
  • Her team is: Hisuian Lilligant (transmasc), Rufflet, Duskull, Gastrodon, and Jolteon.
  • Has no concept of the pandemic the other fallers talk about; Mega Evolution also didn’t exist in her world.
  • Very Very Sapphic. Her girlfriend is Irida (I hc her as being early 20s, so it’s NOT a minor/adult relationship, I would rather die).

Frost

[ Forever Bestie ]

Her forever bestie, one of two (the other being Ingo). Jolyne loves him very dearly, and even if they are apart, she will still think of him.

Lynn Snow

[ Friend ]

Ever since Lynn saved Jolyne from drowning, the latter has been attached to her. She gives Lynn random items often, and on occasion, gifts as well.
