Chop

 Species (based on): Black Carpenter Ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus

 Size: 18 mm

Chop is an old, four-legged ant who was friends with Head Nurse Birch before she died. After she lost two of her legs during a hunt, she retired from hunting and went to work as a "butcher", an ant who inspects cadavers for evidence of poisons or diseases.

During the events of Fern's story, Chop tries to hide Fern from the surface for reasons she is determined to keep secret, except for the fact that it is connected to her late friend, Birch. She also goes on a march east to help her cousins deal with a deathroot (cordyceps) plaguing their land and gets quite the shock when she sees Fern has snuck off with them.
