Fern

 Species (based on): Black Carpenter Ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus

 Size: 16 mm

Fern was supposed to be a princess but hatched from her cocoon looking more like a prince. As a result of her diminished size, as well as her misshapen wings, she could not leave her colony to become a queen and was instead assigned the job of a drifter; a type of ant with no specific job or skill set.

During the events of her story, she learns that she's secretly being kept underground under the orders of an ant named Chop. After getting no answers as to why, she stows away with a swarm marching east to help their cousins with a deathroot (cordyceps) outbreak, at first out of spite, then out of hope she might learn something about herself there.
