History
Since he was a young boy, Richard was always fascinated with performers and other forms of show-biz. Being an extravagant lad himself he dedicated his life to studying magic and creating his own traveling magic show, complete with dazzling effects, extreme (and dangerous) stunts, and wondrous outlandish outfits. After much success he decided to name the show, The Great Mercutio!
During the height of his success, Richard really wanted to wow the crowd with a slurry of new magic. One in particular was giving him some trouble and as a result decided it would be much easier just to create a spell that would transfer all written knowledge from a book to your mind. Not thinking of the consequences, he tested the spell on himself...
abilities
His spell to transfer all written knowledge to your mind wasn't a complete failure. While he no longer has a normal human head, with enough concentration he can call forth any book he's read in the past to be written into his pages. Cookbooks, storybooks, spellbooks, you name it, if Richard has read it, you can too! Just don't think too hard about the fact that you're holding his head in your hands and he's probably staring daggers into you... You can't read his book for too long though because then it starts to cause a lot of pain in his neck area. Like some sort of weird magical tether that isn't suppose to be stretched too far for a long period of time.
If he doesn't concentrate into making his head a certain kind of book, then his book contains a never ending 3rd person view of his entire life. There seems to be no discernible way to view a certain time period or event without explicitly asking him to concentrate on that point in his life, but seeing as how he despises anyone reading something so personal, all you'll ever read is random snippets of his life when you open his book while he's sleeping. Just be sure he doesn't catch you.
