Description

Cruel, manipulative, and pragmatic. He typically appears composed and is seen either sneering or stern, but this is merely a front; he is actually rather unstable and emotionally volatile with a fierce temper, which he does his best to hide. Though he would never admit it, he has a strong sense of justice, which manifests in vastly different ways depending on his stage of life.

Cunning and intelligent, he is knowledgeable in matters both magical and scientific, having dedicated significant amounts of time to the pursuit of both. He has a natural affinity for earth magic and is a formidable opponent in combat, though he prefers not to get directly involved.

As a shifter, his true form is essentially a mass of black sludge, eyes, tentacles, and sharp teeth. Its shape vaguely resembles that of a spider's, but it is ultimately rather fluid and dynamic in nature. While he is in his human form, hints of his true form show through his shadow; he can manifest it as black tendrils that grow visibly inky and slimy the more his grip over his human forms slips. The mark on his face is actually how his kind scars; it was inflicted upon him by Alistair many years ago.

A shifter masquerading as a priest in service to the Old Gods who were once worshiped all across Auster. The continent vaguely resembles Victorian England, with rudimentary magitechnology being developed primarily by the once-great Khidian Empire.

To put it simply, he's a major antagonist whose primary goal is to destroy the world. Under his disguise, he carefully nudges the course of history through whispered words and deceit in order to bring about his ruinous vision. Believing that both humans and shifters alike are depraved creatures beyond salvation, his jaded nature has turned him somewhat sadistic, and he is unaffected by the suffering of others brought about by his own actions. However, circumstances cause his allegiances to shift, and he ends up an unlikely ally to Lysandre. This unexpected turn of events leads Enoch to ultimately help save the very world he wished to condemn, albeit begrudgingly.

Lysandre

Ideological opposites by every definition of the phrase. Lysandre battles between wanting to both subjugate and redeem Enoch. Conversely, Enoch is fascinated with Lysandre, whose genuine idealism and stalwart pureheartedness seem too good to be true. Both are obsessed with the other, and both stake the validities of their entire worldview on the outcome of this battle of wills. Neither seems to realize yet that Lysandre has already won.

Alistair

Enemies. Alistair fears Enoch, as they mistakenly believe he still bears a grudge for the scar they left on his face. Enoch does despise Alistair, but not for that reason; in fact, though he likes to pretend otherwise, his hatred is fueled by much pettier emotions, as he envies what he perceives as Alistair's carefree existence and cannot understand why his fellow kinsman would willingly choose to fraternize with humans.

Sayf

Estranged siblings. Sayf has not seen their brother in many years - not since he drove them away with a threat to harm them lest they show their face to him again. In truth, Enoch is fiercely protective of his sister, and pushes them away both because he believes it will keep them safe and because he views them as his weakness. Sayf, however, simply believes their brother is a hateful villain who must be put down.

In the aftermath of the world's salvation, Enoch is sentenced to two centuries of servitude, during which he must devote the wealth of his knowledge to the rebellion's reconstruction efforts. In specific, he becomes an archivist for the Archive, a grand library of books and tomes built into the towers of the old Empire's castle.

He spends much of this time contemplating his life, and gradually comes to appreciate the ironic freedom from the veil of his own hatred. Lysandre in particular is a frequent visitor to the Archive, and the two grow closer, approaching a distance that flouts the line between friendship and love.

Lysandre

Cautious friends who were once ideological enemies. Both understand and recognize the grip they have over each other, and handle that responsibility with more care. Enoch is thankful to Lysandre for showing them how to love living, and Lysandre is thankful to Enoch for showing him how to live for himself more. They maintain as much of a healthy distance as is possible for them.

Sayf

Awkward siblings who are trying their best to repair their broken relationship. Now that Sayf knows the truth about their brother, they genuinely want what is best for him, but struggle to articulate those feelings, let alone help make them reality. Enoch is disturbed by the idea that his little sister could possibly be the one protecting him, rather than the reverse, and maintains his standoffish attitude.

Two centuries after the evaporation of the Font, Enoch finishes his sentence and enters into a world completely foreign to him, somewhat resembling the Western 1920s. The times have changed drastically, and all of the humans he once knew are long passed. For a few years, he makes a name for himself as a surgeon, practicing medicine for those in need. But eventually, he receives a call for help from a familiar old enemy and finds himself at Alistair's doorstep.

The extended time in captivity has made him softer and kinder and more appreciative of life, though in many ways he is naturally still the same person. The two reconnect and strike off something new together, abandoning their old grudges in place of something unexpected.

Alistair

'Friends' currently cohabitating under Alistair's own behest. As the only remaining survivors of what occurred two hundred years ago, they have much reason to stay together. Alistair clings to Enoch out of a deep-seated fear of loneliness, while Enoch tolerates Alistair out of what is, at first, a sense of obligation. As they spend more time together, however, they come to realize that they aren't so bad a match after all.

Sayf

Siblings who can depend on each other. Though they do not frequently meet, both of them are much more open about their feelings, and the degree to which they care for one another is evident.
