About

i'll give you heatstroke, i'm getting you and i'm losing me

All the world's a stage, and Shiloh is the leading man. Impulsive, avaricious, and more than a little arrogant, he's chiefly concerned with his presentation and the weight of his pockets. He stands out, his skills are unmatched, and he makes it look easy. He is not the type to lose sleep over others' opinions of him; he does not go out of his way to make friends or enemies. Either they'll stay out of his way or they won't, and if they think they can best him they're welcome to try. He's naturally a lucky kind of guy, which may explain how he's still alive. If it's up to raw chance, he'll often walk away with the best deal, or the least scathed.

As a dedicated Salmon Runner at the top ranks of Grizzco's Splatsville location, Shiloh pulls a surprising amount of clout unexpected of someone so young and, well, hard to get along with. This has not made him popular among his fellow grizzled veterans. He can only play well with others to a point; the team's best interest is usually also his own, but he can rarely resist the impulse to show off, even if it lands someone, including himself, in trouble. Death is cheap to Inklings, and it's taught him to be reckless, always pushing himself to do just a little more, get one more egg in the basket. One doesn't become a legend by settling where they are.

Shiloh's spending habits ensure he spends most of his waking hours on shifts at Grizzco, so it's rare he has time for other hobbies. If the payout is bad, he'll grudgingly turn to turf war to make up the deficit. Otherwise, he has quite a taste for the arts: he is a surprisingly avid reader, an enthusiastic acrylic painter (even if he perhaps overestimates his technical skill)...and he regards shoplifting as an art form.

Design notes
  • Note heterophobiachromia: his left eye is blue, his right eye is gray-green
  • Ear piercings can be plugs or tunnels of any color
  • Standard outfit: patchwork bomber (or any bomber or denim jacket), skipjack work boots, tinted shades (optional, often hanging from collar)
  • Laced with superficial scars from constant Salmon Run shifts--go crazy
Story

Shiloh was born to an unremarkable, middle-class Inkopolitan family, where things quickly changed. His mother divorced his dad and left when he was barely a toddler; he hasn't seen her since and doesn't remember her at all. Suddenly having to support and raise his family alone, his father divided his time equally between his career and spending time with his two children, in doing so sacrificing time for himself, his time to rest and recover. His health declined over the next several years, and he passed when Shiloh was eight.

Now in the hands of his adolescent older sibling Oakley, the two of them moved to Splatsville, mostly due to a cheaper cost of living. Shiloh fell for the desert environment immediately, never a fan of the colder Inkadian winters and captivated by the sprawling, disorganized city bathed by the sun. The change of scenery did him some good, but did not solve every problem. Starting from scratch in a new town right off the back of such a loss did not make Shiloh especially personable. To his peers, he was a dirt-poor orphan who acted out for attention--it didn't get him many, or any, friends. They weren't worth relying on anyway.

After uprighting, as many Inklings that age tend to, Shiloh took up casual turf war, primarily to earn himself some spending money but then to also serve as an outlet, a reprieve from all those frustrating hours wasted in school. He quickly earned himself a reputation and several warnings for...unsportsmanlike behavior, culminating in an impermanent but lengthy ban from turf war altogether. Out of school at this point and with no prospects of gainful employment, Shiloh heard whispers of a job not for the faint of heart, but that rewarded its successful workers handsomely.

Unfazed by Grizzco's obvious shadiness and the physical demand of a typical Salmon Run shift, Shiloh found himself genuinely enjoying the job. Even now he takes a sort of pride in being so dedicated to a labor that most others can't or won't handle. Comfortably a veteran with multiple years of experience under his belt (a rarity--Grizzco sees very high employee turnover), he's content to ride this wave as far as it will take him.

Spencerrival
Shiloh's favorite most-hated coworker. Spencer is an abrasive know-it-all with no tolerance for idiocy and the amazing ability to make her problems yours. Her two saving graces: they routinely double quota whenever stuck on shift with each other, which happens alarmingly often; and she's delightfully easy to annoy. Shiloh could do without her venomous attitude and her buzzkill tendencies, but as much as he hates to admit it, she does know her stuff. Inadvertently, she's by far the person he spends the most time with, even outside of work--it's weird how she's always wherever he wants to be, but he's stopped questioning it. Deep, deep down, he may hold the tiniest smidgen of respect for her. After all, not everyone can keep up with him.

Oakleyolder sibling
Seven years Shiloh's senior, Oakley all but raised him after their father's passing. Everything Shiloh knows, he learned from them--his outlook, his values, his presentation. Oakley has never quite grown out of their teenage rebellious streak, and while they share their little brother's penchant for getting into trouble, they lack his inborn luck to get back out of it. The two are very close, their relationship surprisingly (usually) frictionless. Even now in their adult lives, Oakley is fully aware they are Shiloh's first and only confidant; if he doesn't tell them, he tells no one.
