there's comfort in being a disappointment.

Among the neon lights of the inner city, Denji's unusual appearance fits in well. A frequent of the dive bars in the area, he is a familiar face to many, and yet few can say they know him any more beyond that... Most often, Denji functions as an informant for Pimeja, collecting any useful information about the activity of rival gangs. He can be found in bars, parties, alleyways, all the while playing whatever character he invented for this particular outing.

Though, informant isn't always the job he's held within the gang. The one he has the most experience with - and the one he's most fond of - is being the gang's getaway driver. Unfortunately, due to his high ranking position, Denji rarely ever gets to partake in this job - he's restricted to inner circle missions only - so, he cherishes any time he gets to spend behind the wheel.

First Face : The World

Denji is a disappointment. Always has been, probably always will be. The list of people that he has disappointed is probably longer than he is tall - his father, all of his teachers, his school friends, his manager at his high school job, his fellows in the gang… The list continues, full of miscellaneous names and faces that have shaken their heads, raised their voices, kicked him to the curb. While being regarded as such a disappointment would probably give a sting to most people, for Denji, his status as fuckup-extraordinaire simply means that he can keep on living the way he’s living and get nothing more than a slap on the wrist in return - because that’s just how he is. He can keep blowing his money on drugs, keep showing up unannounced to crash on your couch, keep leaving your calls and texts unanswered for weeks. It’s just the way he is. You can’t fix stupid - and you can’t force Denji to climb out of the hole he’s dug himself into.

Second Face: Close ones

Denji is perhaps a bit more of an open book than he should be for one in his position. He’s a high ranking member of Pimeja, entrusted with the full picture of its operations, and yet he hardly keeps his guard up around others. Of course, he’s not going to go around telling everyone his status and what Viper’s next plan is, but when it comes to his personal issues, it’s not all that hard to get a read on him. His emotions are often written plainly on his face for all to see - thankfully, this doesn’t pose a threat to any of his gang business, as he’s kept away from the scene - most often, he’s performing stakeouts or being the getaway driver - activities that (thankfully) allow him to keep some distance between him and the enemy. Though, if the enemy is posing as a friend…

Denji becomes lonely extremely easily. He’s used to having constant companionship - first from Ezra, then from Menna. Now, missing that friendship, Denji is almost too eager for any kind of closeness, often seeking it in the wrong places. He’ll befriend most anyone without much in the way of discrimination - so long as they don’t expect much out of him, he won’t expect it out of them. So… most of what he would call friends are simply… people he is around. They’re people to drink with, to watch movies with, to play games with, to have available for couch surfing… not people to tell about his dreams, his fears, not to laugh with or hug - and that’s all he really needs from them, anyway. Or so he reassures himself when he’s hovering over the call button under Menna’s contact information.

Third Face: True Reflection

Denji has never really seen a future for himself. as a kid, he’d never particularly wanted to be anything. He’d get asked what he wanted to be when he grew up and… he wouldn’t have an answer. He’d get told that surely something had to interest him, and after more poking and prodding, he’d give whatever answer he thought of first - astronaut, veterinarian, race car driver, superhero - satisfying whoever had asked him the question. And yet, none of it was real. At 15, he couldn’t imagine he would ever make it to 20. Hell, at 25, he can’t see himself living past 30. Maybe he’ll surprise himself again, but until he does, he lives day to day, moment to moment. Of course, this sounds good in theory, but in practice… he has a lot of regrets.

Trivia
  • Denji hasn't had an apartment in years, and has been living out his car and crashing at his friends' houses.
  • He cries a lot... he finds it embarassing to cry in front of others, as he views his own life as pretty easy compared to the others in the gang, but on his own he tends to just break out in tears seemingly randomly.
  • He drives a 1995 Toyota MR2. He keeps it in good shape, as it needs to be in top performance for his gang work, but as it's also functioning as a makeshift home, it could be a bit cleaner on the inside...
  • Denji tends to form little crushes on most of his friends, as he has trouble differentiating between platonic and romantic feelings. Though, if these feelings were ever to be reciprocated, he would most likely lose them.
  • You can find his playlist here! His favorite bands include The Cure, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Sonic Youth!

It's a habit of Denji's to go home with strangers. When it's so hard for him to be honest with his friends, sex ends up being a way for him to feel some sort of intimacy, even if it's meaningless in the end.

He'll rarely ever keep in contact with any of his flings. There are a few exceptions, but they're few and far between. For most of his encounters, they're just a warm body for him to hold.

Denji always appears charmingly disheveled in a way no one but him could really pull off. His hair rarely, if ever, stays tamed, his skin isn't the best, and he's got just the worst eyebags - yet, with his natural ability to charm and his warm smile, he can make all his flaws work.

In his younger years, he'd been big into the punk scene - and while he's no longer so extreme in his appearance, there are some slight hints to that part of his development in his appearance, whether it's his love of patterns, his multiple piercings/jewelry items, or his tattoos.

Design notes

  • glasses are optional! they have magenta lenses :)
  • his necklace with the pimeja sign can either be tucked into his shirt or on full display
  • only silver jewelry, please! but make sure you put a lot of it!

TL;DR: "Too Long, Didn't Read"

WARNINGS: neglect, drug use, drug overdose

  • He lived in a neglectful situation as a child, and was isolated by his peers - though, he had one friend, Ezra, who he saw as a younger brother, and who lived in a similar situation. The two formed their own makeshift family.
  • Over the course of high school, Denji realizes he can do whatever he wants with no repercussions from his father. He steals drugs from his father and he encourages Ezra into following along with his new habit.
  • After graduating high school, Denji moves out of his father's house, and becomes a dealer in order to pay for his expenses. Soon, Ezra approaches Denji, asking to be taken in. He accepts and the two begin living together.
  • The two of them become full members of Pimeja, and become closer than ever. Though they struggle, they find their own way in the environment they've found themselves in.
  • One night, Denji gets a phone call from Ezra, who is ODing and afraid. Denji rushes over, but in fear of legal punishment, Denji hides evidence of his drug use before calling an ambulance. Thanks to his neglect, Ezra dies before help arrives.
  • Denji sinks into his work to distract himself from his growing self hatred. He climbs the ranks and becomes a trusted member of Pimeja.

Chapter One: "family disappointment"

WARNINGS: neglect

Conceived as the result of a one-time hookup, Denji’s mother handed him off to his father as soon as she was physically able. She could barely afford to feed herself, let alone a baby, while his father at least had some semblance of a stable income. So, while the last thing he wanted in his life was a newborn baby, and especially her baby, his father agreed to take him in, rather than allow him to flounder in the foster care system. Though, it’s hard to say if his life with his father was any better than it would have been if he had been put in the system.

During his childhood, it seemed as though everyone in his neighborhood had a part in raising him - every day, someone different would be watching him for the day while his father went out to do God-only-knows-what - then, once he could be trusted on his own, he was left home alone. During the tiny amounts of time he and his father spent together, there was a clear divide between them. Denji would try to speak to his father, but he would only respond with one or two words, a sentence at most, with a clear note of disgust in his voice. Sometimes he would ask about his mother, but any mention of the woman would only incur a sharp word.

He eventually learned to stop trying to form a relationship with his dad, as every attempt only earned him a blank stare and a sigh. Having nothing else to turn to, Denji eventually began to form an imaginary image of his mother in his head, what she might have looked like, sounded like, felt like. He would imagine her soothing words whenever he was feeling down, her proud smile when he accomplished something - anything to replace the parent he already had.

When he started middle school, Denji would once again be treated as an outcast, this time by his classmates - rumors had begun to circulate about his mother being a sex worker. All good rumors have some truth to them, for when Denji mentioned something about it in passing to his father, he avoided the subject, and when pressed further, he simply told Denji not to worry about it with the kind of curt tone that said it all. That image of his mom he had been forming in his head all his life came crumbling down, the warm aura he’d been imagining replaced with a cold sense of disgust - and suddenly his father’s resentment of him made too much sense.

Slowly, that feeling of disgust for both of his parents would seep down into his own self worth, with his isolation from his classmates only exacerbating the spread. Though, he was lucky enough to have one friend in his life, a boy a couple grades below named Ezra. Like him, Ezra was another misfit kid, so they naturally stuck together, and actually got on really well. The both of them didn’t have the best home lives, so the two of them formed a family of their own. They would spend their entire teenage years inseparable.

Chapter Two: "it doesn't matter"

WARNINGS: drug use

At some point in his high school life, Denji came to the realization that he could get away with anything he wanted without any repercussions from his father, considering the fact that the two barely spoke a single word to each other. Ezra’s family situation was the same way, and the two would begin to spend more and more time together out of the house, most of the time just walking around downtown Hadeus, loitering at corner stores, dining and dashing Chinese food joints, spray painting walls with whatever immature language they wanted.

One particular night, as they were sitting in a little abandoned park, Denji pulled out something he had stolen from his father - a small plastic bag filled with powder. Denji and Ezra had smoked weed together plenty of times, but this was the first time They had ever tried something this strong. He’d been preparing this for a while - sneaking tiny amounts at a time from his father until he’d gotten enough for a dosage for the both of them. While Ezra was scared, he was eager to please - so he didn’t say no to Denji’s request.

As time passed it became clear that the occasional stolen dose from Denji’s father wouldn’t be enough to sustain their new habit, and anyway, he was starting to suspect his thefts. The two of them started to buy their own from some of their fellow students at school, and their little trips out started to become more and more frequent.

As soon as he was able, Denji moved out of his father’s house without so much as a second glance. He moved into a small apartment in downtown Hadeus, attempting to get into a few colleges, but didn’t find himself being accepted to any, so he decided to just work two jobs. He would soon find out that his level of income wouldn’t be enough to fund both his expenses and his growing addiction, so, getting into contact with some of his old high school buddies, he begins to deal drugs at a low level. Soon after this, Ezra would knock on his door one night, carrying a bag of clothes - he had been kicked out of his house and was looking for shelter, just for a little bit. Denji welcomed him with open arms, allowing him to stay for as long as he liked. Finally, their found family was a reality.

Chapter Three: "i fucked you up, man"

WARNINGS: drug use

As more time passed, both Denji and Ezra became members of Pimeja, with Ezra dropping out of school to do this. The two of them were closer than ever after living and working together, but what brought them together most was the struggle - the struggle of having no one but each other, of almost being unable to afford the rent every month, of having to deal with the asshole higher-ups, of constantly trying to chase a high. It brought them together in a way nothing else could ever hope to. And yet, whenever he caught a glimpse of Ezra coming home from working with a new bruise, whenever he would catch him throwing up in the toilet after they’d gotten high, he’d feel a twinge of guilt - because who had gotten him into this situation other than himself? And while their lives were shitty before, was this really the right answer? To writhe and drown in the filth and never climb out of it?

He didn’t know, and to be honest, he couldn’t force himself to care, because he couldn’t ever change his choices.

He came home one night to Ezra asleep - didn’t think much of it, though normally he’d be waiting for him to come home. He left him be, simply shot up and sat on the chair across from him. Around 45 minutes later, as he drifted in and out of consciousness, he’d notice Ezra twitching and jerking sporadically. He stared at him for a long moment before realizing he was seizing. He sat up to call an ambulance, but hesitated - when they got here and saw all the things they had, what would happen to him? And Ezra? No, he couldn’t get into any more trouble than he needed to - so before he called 911, he stuffed anything that could get them into trouble into a trash bag and threw it out. It couldn’t have taken him any more than five minutes.

And yet, five minutes was all it took.

Over the next few months, Denji would never be truly conscious - whether it was grief or drugs fogging up his mind, he was more of a zombie than a human being - but at some point, the brain fog would clear up, and he would throw himself into his work, until he would climb the ranks, transitioning from petty drug dealer to Viper’s primary getaway driver, as well as a kind of jack of all trades in the field.

The Past: First Encounter and Impressions

Most relationships formed out of Pimeja are temporary. It's just the nature of the job. Still, something drew these two together - similar attitudes, similar outlook on life, similar experiences. These two found their places in life together, and didn't think anything could come between them.

The Present: Attitudes and Dynamic

Lately, these two haven't been as close as they once were. Thanks to Denji tendency to ghost and Menna's general lack of care, the two sometimes go months without really interacting with each other. Every time he thinks about it, Denji feels the pit in his stomach grow - so he doesn't think about it. Denji treasures each little moment the two spend together, but he can tell Menna's heart isn't in it.

The Future: Hopes

Denji wants to fix this relationship, but isn't sure how. He can't possibly heal the trauma that Menna's gone through, but he can't think of anything else to do. He just wishes he could clear up the fog in his brain and spend time together like they used to, but there's no clear way for him to accomplish this goal.

coworker.

"Hm. He's... alright, as far as people in this place go."

Positive Negative

Pepper and Denji's relationship is... weird, to say the least. Denji is honestly afraid of her and that strange, offputting aura of hers... and yet, whenever the two spend a while together, he feels like something is building up, like something is just waiting to happen... and then, the two will have to part ways, and the feeling will fade.

boss.

"He's sloppy."

Positive Negative

Denji is intensely terrified of Viper, moreso than anyone else. He's considered leaving Pimeja countless times, and would have done it by now if not for her - because he knows his life would be a living hell if he even survived an attempt at running away. Any respect he has for her is based solely in fear.

"adopted" nephew.

"Denji? He's alright, I guess."

Positive Negative

Denji, in truth, can't stand to be around Felix for more than a few hours. For the first, say, five hours they spend together, things will go great - sure, Felix is annoying, but the two have fun. Around that five hour mark, though, Felix will always say some insensitive remark that puts Denji in a mood to scream, something he never does - and nobody can ever get Felix to repeat what he said to him.

friend.

"Aww, I love that guy."

Positive Negative

Rarely does Denji find a friend that he truly cares about outside of work - and Yura was a lucky find for sure. There is just some kind of understanding between the two that he can't really find anywhere else. It's... nice.
