Profile
Disgai Mungbean
Manipulative • Cunning • Dissimulative
"Sometimes, the greatest sins must be committed in order to lead one closer to perfection. Perhaps that is what separates me from you… a willingness to do what is necessary to succeed, regardless of the stances others may take against my own."
A man whose thirst for knowledge could very well lead to the end of the world. Despite his seemingly polite demeanor, he makes it extremely clear to all of those who cross him that he will not hesitate to intervene if they get in the way of his pursuit. He is willing to temporarily ally himself with anyone that can further his progress, and would not hesitate to drop them upon a moment's notice. His goal has taken him across multiple worlds, through different eras, and led to hours upon hours of research and experimentation. Whether that research was ethical or not is a question best left unanswered.

- He presents himself as a seemingly polite and learned individual, leading to many lowering their guards around him (potentially leading to their demise).

- If he were to become a lightwarden, his name would be Forgiven Epistemophilia.
- Despite his tendencies of working nonstop, he enjoys relaxing every once in a while with a cup of kumquat tea.

Early Life + A Realm Reborn
Being the son of two gleaners, Disgai spent his early years being carted around the Three Great Continents during their travels or staying in Labyrinthos' Sharlayan Hamlet doing research of his own. He was fascinated with organic life and reading from a young age. With his uncanny ability to quickly catch onto new ideas and material, he managed to make himself known to the other researchers in the hamlet and was somewhat regarded as a child prodigy. Simple recognition from his peers was not enough for him; he always set his sights higher upon successfully achieving a goal, and as such decided being a highly influential researcher required outside experience that one couldn't get without traveling out on their own. Always one to bend the rules in his favor, Disgai chose to use his parents' occupations as gleaners as a viable reason to leave Labyrinthos despite their rules of secrecy and set out so he could get this hands-on experience himself. (However, to any friends asking, he "snuck out" and "evaded all of the Forum's members" for dramatic effect.)
During the events of A Realm Reborn, Disgai spent several years wandering Etheirys and learning more about its inhabitants, whether through the people or the flora and fauna around him. He ended up finding out about the ability to trap aether (and by extension living organisms) within auracite prior to the Scions' revelation of such matters due to a twist of fate where he came in contact with primal-aspected auracite. Such auracite can typically influence or even temper an individual. Disgai was lucky enough to already have certain protective measures taken, but they weren't enough to give him full immunity to its power, thus beginning the slow process of the auracite warping his mind.Heavensward + Stormblood
Disgai spent most of his time holed away within one of his laboratories experimenting on souls trapped within auracite. He did not participate much in the Dragonsong War and its conclusion. Although he had a few run-ins with the Scions, he usually was not seen past occasionally being spotted collecting various resources for his experiments. In Stormblood, Disgai was linked to various disappearances throughout Eorzea as well as the Far East, leading to Lapis and Estinien Wyrmblood being tasked with his capture. Disgai indirectly worked with them in the fights against the Garlean troops as he repeatedly raided their outposts and supplies to take what he needed for his own projects, making it easy for Lapis and Estinien to finish off the rest of the camp.
Shadowbringers
While the Warrior of Light and several of the Scions were on the First, Disgai spent his time looking into cross world travel so he could further investigate the power of the Ascians. Lapis and Estinien Wyrmblood were unable to find and capture him during this time period, as he was extremely careful about concealing his whereabouts and future plans. Upon finding the Warrior of Light's entrance to the First nearby the Crystal Tower, he spent a bit of time investigating there before going back to the Source. In post Shadowbringers, several of the Scions reported seeing him pop up in areas around the same time Elidibus was present, but they were unable to track him down.

"Ugh... It's as if he genuinely enjoys torturing me by writing these papers on such foul creatures. Truly unpleasant." Despite Disgai's rather infamous status, Mint is still willing to discuss his research with him from time to time and exchange notes. They have run into each other multiple times at various locations (one scientific research facility in particular) and occasionally meet up at Labyrinthos. Disgai doesn't really have a serious reason to dislike him, but he happens to be in favor of morbol conservation efforts, and such an abominable sin is punishable by death.
"Such an amusing individual. His readiness to assume the best in others and believe in the goodness of one's heart... it's truly something. I can only hope that they don't take it too harshly when the time comes to take my plans a step further, if it ever does." In a world where Disgai ended up going adventuring rather than becoming a scientist, Buneary is Disgai's traveling companion along with Mint. Disgai views him as overly kind and a bit naive, but finds him to be pretty reliable. Although he doesn't want to admit it to himself (as it would interfere with his ability to detach himself and only focus on his goals), he views them as a good friend.
"Ah, my good friend... let us dance in the wind and shade." Disgai's unsuspecting dance partner that he meets up with on Sundays for some exercise and relaxation. An adventurous individual who can be a bit naive and careless at times, but carries good intentions and is always trying their hardest. He hates The Doctor, but is unaware of Disgai's true identity. If he ever were to find out...
"It really is a tragedy that we have such opposing morals... you would have made an excellent accomplice." Lapis, being a former Warrior of Light, despises Disgai and is one of the only individuals aware of his identity as The Doctor. During the events of Shadowbringers, Lapis remained at the Source and worked alongside Estinien Wyrmblood to locate his whereabouts, but was unsuccessful due to Disgai always being a step ahead.
"Someone playing the typical protagonist role and trying to be a hero, how classic. If only he'd let me borrow some aether... I've heard his is particularly potent." Hien is naturally against letting Disgai continue on with his experiments, given that his plans can occasionally end with sacrificing innocents. Although he doesn't necessarily want him dead, they aren't really on good terms after Disgai's repeated attempts to siphon some of his aether. Disgai feels that he could unlock his hidden potential if he worked with him, and continues to ask to do so regardless of the fact that he already knows Hien's answer.
"Let us partake in the simple pleasures while out on the road. May we cherish these days, for it shall not stay this way forever." Disgai's adventuring buddy from several years ago. After running into him at the Ryakgyr Peninsula, they decided to work together for a while and spent several months traveling together before parting ways. Uto intends on meeting up with him some time in the future to catch up and exchange tales. As a fellow iconoclast, they had no qualms with his motives and beliefs, and got along quite well.
