About

When Folger was just a yearling, her grandfather gifted a her claw fashioned of shining metal, promising to her that it would one day unlock an unimaginable treasure in his old Wolfsnow hometown of Stonecall... a place long lost to the expansive White Zone covering the island. Thinking nothing of it at the time, it was when she started training as a roving investigator under a unfriendly old molly named Nimble that the call of the mystery returned to her heart. While able to prioritise her work and clear several cases throughout Mistglen with aplomb, the itch to uncover her own, personal, mystery remained tantalizingly unscratched.

When rumours of a relic expedition reach Folger's ears, she eagerly jumped at the rare opportunity to undergo such a study without ISR accreditation and immediately took a season off work to travel home to Clambercliff. Right now, wishes are of no import to her. After all, she's going to make it to Stonecall with her own two paws.

Notes

  • Scars occasionally visible on her nubs.
  • Her tail is very expressive, especially when she's moving!
  • Her shawl is made of thick wool, tied at the shoulder with a clasp.

Verfolger is a high-white lilac tortie lynx point. Although a shorthair, her coat is thick and fluffy to touch, something she inherited from her Wolfsnow-born grandfather. She has a white face with patches of pale brown and cream on either side of the top of her head, and a small lilac saddle. Although her front legs were all-white, her hind legs are lilac brown, save for her two white paws and cream tortie patches. Her eyes are a deep, almost heather-blue, but carry a warmness in spite of the icy color.

In terms of her build, Folger similarly takes more after her papa and grandfather than her dad with her generally thin frame. What sets her apart from all of her family, however, is how limber she is. As being strong and flexible is actually important for her to get around in her day-to-day, she appears distinctively supple in build, and the power in her muscular hind legs and small, compact paws is clear to see with her every motion.

What is perhaps to other cats the most distinctive feature about Verfolger is her missing front legs. Born with malformed limbs, she eventually had to have them both amputated due to infection while she was still newborn, which allowed her to live the rest of her life fairly free from health issues. While it does hinder her ability to interact with many daily-use appliances designed for use by dexterous front paws, movement in itself has been little issue to her since she was very young, and she gets by just fine with a great deal of wriggling, hops, and occasional spurts of bipedal hobbling on her powerful hind legs.

Personality

+ Perceptive • + Imaginative • + Confident • + Energetic • = Honest • = Adventurous • = Proud • = Undisciplined • - Impatient • - Self-centered • - Reckless

While Folger was raised in an environment that placed no real demands on her to prove herself even amid her disability, she has nevertheless matured into a cat defined by her travails. Highly confident in her own ability, especially the ability to do her job well, she can probably come off as more than a little arrogant to cats in the more structured professional world. Though a fiercely shrewd and perceptive cat who could've gone on to exceptional feats thanks to her sharp intuition, she floundered in school due to her independent nature and chronic inability to respect rules, leading her to take up a trade apprenticeship that would satisfy her insatiable curiosity instead of furthering her academia.

Her outside-of-the-box nature lends well to her profession, however, and more often than not her affinity for overlooking convention and cutting corners allows her to root out the truth quickly and painlessly. This is all well and good when it comes to small-town investigative jobs, but in any other context translates into blundering recklessness and a skill for attracting more attention to oneself than is always safe. But as a cat that is incredibly self-oriented almost to the point of insensitivity, this has never been a major worry for Folger herself.

Verfolger has always held close the dream that she will one day make it to Stonecall and finally use her key to unlock the treasure her grandfather alone left for her, and is keen to share that dream to just about everyone she meets. It's a great conversation starter, and combined with her high confidence and positive demeanour she actually finds it very easy to make friends no matter their walk of life, and is keen to catch up with everyone she's met whenever she's in town. Folger is the kind of person who is easy to know at a distance, much harder up close, and is about to trade in her life of a lone traveller for that of a group expedition... let's see how long she lasts.

Strengths

GUMSHOE

As a trained investigator, Verfolger has a very sharp intuition and is usually the first to identify when details - whether in a story or in the environment - don't seem to add up.

CATOSAURUS REX

Folger doesn't move like the average cat, which combined with her energetic nature can actually make her quite slippery and unpredictable in a combat or chase scenario.

STARE INTO THE ABYSS...

Folger may not be all that concerned about spirituality, but spending half her time solving small-town ghost stories ensures she tends to find herself at least a little more attuned to their presence.

Weaknesses

FLUNKIE

Folger struggles in strict academic environments due to her impatient and independent attitude, and as such her sense for factual knowledge tends to be quite poor.

LOOK PA, NO HANDS!

Lacking front paws and claws means that there are a number of objects Folger is unable to deftly manipulate. She can try her best with what she has, but it remains a disadvantage.

... AND IT STARES BACK AT YOU

Folger is a Mistglen cat to the core, and in spite of her general agonisticism she finds any sort of up-close interference with ghosts more than a little uncomfortable.

Synopsis

DETAILED HISTORY COMING SOON

Verfolger was born in the outskirts of Clambercliff in a small but familial household, raised by her parents, her older siblings, and her grandfather alongside her littermate Vili. Both her and her sister had congenital birth defects that led to amputations, with Vili losing her right paw and Folger most of her front legs, but a nuturing and constructive upbringing ensured neither cat felt particularly held back by their disabilities. Not particularly affluent by Clambercliff standards as the daughter of a florist and a newspaper columnist, Folger nevertheless grew up appreciative and ensconsced within the general bustle of the city, carving out a well-known and well-loved place in the community.

Folger in particular had a strong relationship with her grandfather Moonglade, an old Wolfsnow cat who had been raised in a small town outside Seisho called Snowcall before the great White Zone overtook it. When she was still young, Folger's grandfather bestowed upon her a 'key' - an intricate metal claw designed to unlock what he called an unrivalled treasure, something incredibly special that was left abandoned in Stonecall all those years ago. Thinking very little of it at the time, the fanciful story finally caught up with her in school days as she concluded that the only thing the treasure could be is a Relic.

However, school was not an institution she thrived in, and although she began to hold tight the dream that she would one day make it to Stonecall, she knew she was never going to make it by going to institution and towing the line. In fact - a huge fan of puzzles and mystery novels in her youth - her biggest dream was to become a travelling investigator solving mysteries from town-to-town, and as such she barreled straight into an apprenticeship with the only other cat doing the small-town circuit in Mistglen's most desolate areas, a frigid old woman called Nimble.

Though the work was nothing like her novels, something Nimble was very quick to make brutally clear to Folger, the young cat took to her work with fierce competence, finally finding her stride now she was outside the bounds of a structured environment. By the time Folger formally finished her apprenticeship, she had already carved out a name for herself in Mistglen by bringing light to a supply discrepancy that had been plaguing Doveport, solved a slew of unusual ghost sightings in the forests near Edin, and even solving a locked-room murder out in the deep glen. All the while she had been poking at relic scholars, trying to get the wheels turning on a Relic expedition out past Seisho's frigid walls, to increasingly no avail as her reputation with the local schools began to deteriorate.

Folger's first truly independent job took her to the island of Clearwater, where she spent almost a year trying to help the owner of a small orphanage prove her innocence to her neighbours, who suspected she was possessed. It was a gruelling first case, but one that began to teach her the importance of patience as she became a rooted staple in the small, drowsy, but warm community. This was a lesson that followed her as she continued to build a name for herself across Mistglen with case after high-profile case, even making waves with a few Hollowgrove justiciars as a situation involving a sunken trade ship forced them to work together.

Folger was idling in the lumber town of Eastholt when two pieces of news arrived for her at once. First was a letter from the ISR scholar she had been communicating with asking her to stop sending appeals. Second was a day-old copy of the Clambercliff Inkwell - the newspaper her father wrote for, with the story of the Traveler highlighted. One door closes, another opens - and Verfolger wasn't letting up any opportunity to bring her dreams a step closer to reality.

And so begins her latest case - The Stonecall Antiquity. She knows her chances of a direct ticket to western Wolfsnow are slim, but she is convinced a Relic awaits her there... and any pass at an expedition is worth more than all the ISR's red tape put together.

Relations Overview

Helike ('Pa')

parent

The only of Moonglade's children that still lives in Mistglen. Helike is a pleasant but somewhat mild-mannered cat, sociable enough that everyone thinks Folger took after them the most. Folger gets on well with her papa but lacks a particularly special relationship with them.

Fallow ('Dad')

father

A proud but intelligent cat with a missing eye that betrays his rough past. Fallow met Helike in education and the unlike souls bonded over a shared gardening hobby. Folger tends to clash with her dad a lot, but when they're not arguing, they're lovingly griping or solving puzzles together.

Moonglade ('Grandpa')

grandfather

A very old cat who lost his home to the Wolfsnow White Zone when he was young and spent a number of years as a Seisho guard before moving to Mistglen. Estranged from his mate and all of his children save for Helike due to his superstitious and obstinate nature, but adores his granddaughter.

Nimble

mentor

A aged travelling investigator, originally from the Kindlinds but moved to Mistglen for the quieter work after a dangerous job nearly took her life. Cold and unfriendly on the surface, she acts like she regrets taking on Folger as an apprentice but it's clear the two get along.
