haruka

MADOKA AND KISHIO KANO were not expecting to have a child at such a young age. having entered their second year of university, their first-born son came as quite a surprise. after attempting to juggle her pregnancy and her academic career for some months, madoka eventually caved and decided to remain at home to rest and, later, take care of the baby. her husband, still young and pursuing his doctorate in botanical studies, remained in school while working a part-time job on the side. while it was sometimes hard to get by, the newlyweds made the best of what they had in attempts to prepare themselves for their baby.

EVENTUALLY, HARUKA WAS BORN and the family of three was happy for a little while. cozy, home-cooked meals in their small tokyo loft were commonplace. movie nights, when kishio was free from schoolwork, were a treat. they enjoyed the peacefulness that came with the simpler things in life. on the eve of one of those movie nights, however, haruka's mother felt a knot of worry growing in her stomach. later, she would receive a call from the police department informing her that her husband had gotten into a car accident on the outskirts of town. evidently, he had driven there to retrieve a gift for madoka; it was the day of their second anniversary.

FAMILY PHOTO ALBUMS became haruka's best friend as he grew up. his mother never shared the details of her husband's passing to her young son and tried only to remind him of the good times that they both had spent with their father before he died. as he progressed through primary school, it was obvious that haruka had the same inclination towards botany as his father. as a young boy, he kept a small garden on the terrace of his apartment home, which consisted of a sunflower, a tomato plant and some herbs. after watering them, he would sit beside them and read them folk tales from a children's book to help them grow.

WHEN HE ENTERED MIDDLE SCHOOL, haruka was invited to attend hope's peak academy on a scholarship application. apparently, his extraordinary abilities had made him stand out as a member of the tiny garden club in his suburban school. gladly, his mother accepted on his behalf and transferred her son to the prestigious institution. with an abundance of resources now at his disposal, haruka began his grandest project: genetically engineering a flower to memorialize his late father. he began to sketch out plans for its design, which consisted of a bell-shaped head and purple petals. ideally, it would be a flower that bloomed in the light of the moon, rather than during the day. some would be planted around his grave, others potted around his shrine at the kano residence. both, however, would bloom at the same time each night, reconnecting the family to each other after many years apart.
