Erin isn't good at interacting with people. Go figure, he can't speak for heavens sake! How is he supposed to get to know anyone?
Despite the physical limitations that come from having a sewn up mouth, he's learned to communicate through other means. Writing would be the most obvious, but holding an active conversation can only go so far until the other person grows tired of waiting and then reading whatever Erin has hastily scribbled down in his journal. In stead, he mimes and gesticulates whatever he's trying to say. This is limiting, but you'd be surprised of how much you can convey with exaggerated expressions alone. Sign language would be an option too, though it's sadly quite rare to find someone with that kind of knowledge (let alone the same signing language). He'd have better luck asking if someone knew fluent klingon.
Erin is an amazing actor. Just think about it, most lies and pretences are obvious based solely on the liars unconvincing voice. But Erin doesn't have this worry. He can wholly focus on faking expressions and gestures accurately. This means it's incredibly hard to tell what his 'true' self acts like, since he adjusts his personality based on the situation. You may know him as the creepy kid standing by a field at 3 am, or the shy fruit merchant trying to sell you oranges, or that eccentric street performer who keeps attracting unprecedentedly large crowds, or that terrifying circus performer at the carnival who aggressively chases kids away when they stare at him for too long, etc etc. You might say he's playful and somewhat childlike (perhaps the result of having no proper childhood to speak of), but then you ignore the fact that he's highly reflective and unusually calculating for someone his age.
Erin grew up in an average family of farmers. The closest town was miles away, resulting in a sheltered and isolated childhood. Unfortunately, his father and mother weren't exactly parents of the year and would frequently make him work in their wheat fields for hours on end. His main job was to scare the crows away, which were a common pest in their area. They would swarm the skies in massive flocks, covering the sun and casting long shadows upon the field. If you were foolish enough to turn your back on them, they would descend from the heavens and clear the wheat in no time. Erin was therefor condemned to be a living scarecrow for most of his adolescence.
Erin can make contracts with shadows. Whether these 'shadows' are dead people or separate living (or not living) entities is beyond him. He'd rather not know, honestly. What's sure is that they do his bidding as long as he provides them with enough bad dreams to feed off of, which is no problem for Erin. He gets frequent, unrelenting, terror-inducing nightmares. It doesn't help that he's deathly afraid of the dark.

Mint is part of a travelling circus, which is why she has met Erin multiple times (he likes frequenting carnivals). Erin has a crush on her but has trouble communicating this because not only can he not tell her verbally, but he also cannot mime it without looking ridiculous and writing her a love letter is the absolute last thing he would be willing to do.
Whisp is the universal step parent for all kids with shitty (or dead) parents. Erin doesn't get this, however, and keeps thinking that Whisp is an undercover cop who's going to arrest him for all the petty thefts and vandalism he's committed. The confusion runs deeper, though, and Whisp on the other hand isn't sure if Erin is just pretending to run away because he finds it humorous to let Whisp chase after him whenever he's trying to make sure that Erin isn't in trouble.
