Royce came from a large but poor family living in less than ideal condictions. His circumstances drove him to hate the government and their treatment of people in poverty, as well as treatment of immigrants. He's one of the oldest of the Giroux children and gave up a lot of his education to work and help support the family. His dislike of government authorities and the desire to create change allowed him to be scouted out by S.E.A. where he was given intensive training to help him develop into a prized sharpshooter. He worked a little under two decades for S.E.A and became a high-ranking employee, making himself quite well known among the underground criminals. As he aged, he he wanted out of the organization for a peaceful, calmer life but that wasn't going to be easy...

Not wanting to let one of their prized employees go, Mr. White Sr. decided to be petty and set up Royce for life behind bars with no parole. Sending him out on an assassination mission of three politicians, Royce was easily captured from his sniping hideout after someone "accidentally" leaked his location. He was given three life sentence but his time behind bars was spent being mellow and quiet. Royce kept up a ruse of being a feeble older man with terrible memory and for the most part, it kept people off his back. Every now and then though, someone would try to attack him and he'd have the upper hand. A great escape was planned with two other prisoners he managed to befriend, Lars Hagen and Yosef Almasi who were both cellmates to each other. Lars was in for fraud and robbery while Yosef was locked up for homicide, which eventually came to light that he was framed for.

A plan was set in motion that when Lars and Yosef were released, they were given access to Royce's savings in order to start a new life somewhere. They would correspond to Royce in coded terms as the prison would listen or record conversations. Royce managed to escape during a prison riot with a few other members and they went their different ways; he spent many months walking and hitch-hiking, becoming other people to throw the police and S.E.A off his trail. Eventually he called himself Driftwood as he wandered through the states trying to reach the destination Lars and Yosef had picked out. On the way there, he was picked up by Matteo and taken to a gas station to continue his journey. After being left there, Royce would eventually find his way to Matteo once again through a chance meeting at a shady motel. From there, they began a real friendship and bonded over the coincidence of them both being ex-hitmen for S.E.A with bounties on their heads.

Their lives have gone through many ups and downs and for now, Matteo and Royce are living in the forest to get away from the city and from people. They are doing their best to survive and cope with the troubles life has put them through. Recently, he has met one of the employee's working in part of the forest named Reston and has taken an interest in the man. What brings them together is their rocky past being career criminals.
