About
To call Barclay Sinmara unethical is giving him too much credit. He is cruel, untouched by the pain of others, and sacrifices everything that is not his to give. Twisting philosophy and science to suit his own desires, Sinmara burns through lives and resources-to him, they are one and the same-without hesitation. He does hate unnecessary deaths, as it is “wasteful”, but ultimately acknowledges that sacrifices must be made for the sake of his progress; this applies to coworkers, underlings, and test subjects alike. Sinmara does not mourn anyone lost in his work, instead elevating them onto the pedestal of martyrs and deeply respecting them in his own messed up way. He remembers every person involved in his work as well, even the people being forced into painful and traumatizing experiments. This cycle of inflicting immense cruelty while praising the one on the receiving end of said cruelty is as psychologically scarring as it sounds-for those who survive, anyway. Most do not.
Sinmara’s greatest pride and joy is the artificially created Siren, Alto. He failed so many times in the pursuit of this goal; to have a living example of his eventual and wildest success is more than he could have ever asked for. A strong part of him is tempted to abandon the protection of his sponsors, so that Alto might finally confront him after all these years. This is one of his greatest weaknesses. He'd be willing to throw away his life, and all the work that may come of it, just for a chance to revel in what Sinmara considers his life's pinnacle: the peak of all his efforts. It does not register in his mind that Alto is a living, breathing person who despises him. To Sinmara, they are not an individual but rather his belonging; to die at her hand would not be terrible, it would be an honor.

Likes
- His pet butterflies
- The work of Milak Temperance
- Hyperion weaponry
- Freshly brewed tea
Traits
- Usually seen almost compulsively adjusting his clothes-mainly collars, sleeves, ties, and gloves if worn.
- Constantly listening to something, even when it seems counterproductive. Would often have soft music piped into the room when performing surgery on test subjects.
- Tries to keep unnecessary harm from his subjects purely to avoid waste, and will crack down harshly on any workers of his who violate this rule.
- Speaks very affably to everyone, including test subjects. It’s unsurprisingly a huge mindfuck for survivors.
Design Notes/Trivia
- Being an older man, he has plenty of wrinkles, plus smile lines and crow’s feet-depending on circumstances, he can sometimes appear older than he actually is. Also has prominent shadows under his eyes from a lifetime of unhealthy sleep/work cycles.
- He’s an evil scientist, yes, but is not seen with a lab coat as often as you might think.
- Is very fond of his facial hair, and puts effort into keeping it the way that it looks in his pictures. Probably the most dedicated he is to personal grooming-everything else is kept at basic hygiene, as his schedule is constantly filled.
- Hyperion was his favorite employer, as they gave him the most free reign and funding out of anyone he’s worked for thus far. Because of this, he keeps a pin shaped like Helios hidden underneath his coat.
Story
This Guy
Barclay Sinmara was never content with “good enough”. Born and raised on Promethea, his perfectionism and tunnel vision started from a young age; he had to be top of his classes, the best at any extracurricular, better than his peers in every way. Sinmara could not be satisfied with either an average life or a lack of answers. Family and friends alike were repelled by his personality, seeing him as impossible to connect with, and so he found comfort in being alone. Constantly left in the realm of his own head, soon enough Sinmara began to only trust himself and his perception. Everyone else looked at the world in flawed ways. This disconnect could be considered the root of what he would become. People couldn’t just be people, imperfect and complex and capable of both great good and evil; they had to be what Sinmara believed them to be. This was the attitude he carried into his later education and work. Sinmara’s focus was that of the unknown; he refused to believe the universe’s mysteries were impossible to unravel. He wanted to-no, knew he could find the answers. All it would take was a refusal to be stopped by anything. No matter what Sinmara needed to do, he would tear apart the unknown until everything in every world was clear to him.
Seriously. This Guy
Tumbling down the path of-politely speaking-”unethical science” was a breeze in a galaxy controlled by soulless corporations. Sinmara held no shortage of places to go, should he wish to pursue his goals with nothing to get in his way. He worked for numerous companies-Dahl, Maliwan, Atlas to name a few-and became something of a big name, particularly in the study of elemental sciences. His greatest dream, however, came when Sinmara found the works of the philosopher-scholar Milak Temperance. The first interview of theirs he heard hooked him with ease, and the man never looked back. He tore through their books, talks, everything-especially those that spoke of the ancient Eridian civilization, and of Sirens. The latter sank its hooks into Sinmara’s head. Nobody truly knew how Sirens gained their powers, why they were always women, or why only a certain number could exist at a time, and he obsessed over uncovering these questions. Milak Temperance was right; it was stupid to think something as petty as gender was the real reason. Sinmara set his sights on the impossible: on creating a Siren of his own. It was no easy task. Finding subjects, gaining proper funding, gathering competent staff and a lab of his own… it only truly fell into place when Sinmara began to work for Hyperion, an extremely powerful corporation with no shortage of money or bodies. Their meddling with the planet Pandora proved fruitful, and his own goal aligned with theirs; Sirens were connected with the Eridians and by extension, the Vaults. A man-made Siren would make their grand plans so much easier. Luckily for Sinmara, Pandora provided the answer to years of failed experiments, dead subjects, and an utter lack of anything resembling a Siren: it gave the bounty that was Eridium. Along with the many excavated ruins of Eridian architecture, Sinmara held everything he needed, no matter how painful it would be for the people involved. In the end, he found the answer. He created Alto.
Subheader
Alto was, simply put, his greatest success. Sinmara didn’t even care when they lost control and fled the lab, destroying the place and killing many of his staff in the process. He had created a Siren! He’d done what nobody else could have dreamed of! Drunk on the prospect of his own brilliance, Sinmara immediately set about to repeat the process, and truly settle his genius once and for all. The downfall of Hyperion set him back considerably-he felt true loss when Helios fell-but unfeeling corporations are a dime a dozen, and there are many out there eager to snap up an immensely intelligent, analytic, and unconstrained scientist. His work over the past years have taken place once again among several corporations. His former staff eventually began to drop like flies as a certain Vault Hunter enacted revenge, and thus Sinmara was placed under heavy protection to prevent his own untimely demise. Such a shame, too. He would love to see Alto in the flesh again, to remember his achievement. Still, there is always the ECHOnet. Sinmara admits to feeling pride seeing his Siren and their incredible powers; after all, this only happened because of him.
