serenading beautiful music and performing for an audience, Valeri is no stranger to putting on masks. Ever since she had to flee her home country to keep herself safe, she has been living under a lie - hoping that if she pretended to be a boy, her pursuers would not find her.
She ran away 10 years in the past, and the first years were grueling. Almost seven years later was when she was met by the princess in town; and soon, she would be hired as the court jester. From the beginning, she had feelings for Eleanora. There was something electric in that first meeting that resonated with her.
But lately, she has been troubled by the scars of her past, and unsettling nightmares plague her. Something terrible is about to happen, and it will be related to her past - she just knows it.
She has a terrible scar on her chest from ten years ago that never heals. It usually burns an uncomfortable red; it covers most of her chest. Lately, it has started to hurt more often, the red turning a terrifying black. Valeri wonders somewhere deep down if this is when she finally dies - if her past has finally caught up to her.
In the middle of all this, there is buzz about the castle regarding the princess' marriage... and a terrible attack puts the king into a coma. Valeri knows that her past is related, and sets about trying to find out what happened.

Valeri is responsible and serious about her role as a performer; however, she also uses these skills to hide things from people. To most people who have not talked to her much, she comes across as unapproachable.
She is generally wary around people, including those she cares about, being she is terrified of making connections only to have them ripped away from her. She struggles to make friends.
She's a very emotional person deep down, but often that remains in the deepest recesses of her heart. She is very loyal and will do anything for those she cares about. But she tries to keep them at arm's length while doing so.

The princess of Merania and the object of Valeri's affection. She knows that everything about their relation is forbidden, so she has resigned in her heart to never do anything, ever.
Over three years ago, her watching Valeri's performance caused Valeri to become the court jester at the castle; they have spent the past few years slowly breaking the ice, but Valeri's scared that it's getting to a point where she might not be able to turn back anymore.

When Valeri has a bad reaction to seeing the knife that attacked the king, Eva's the one who takes care of the wound she gets on her head.
This is the incident that causes them to become friends, and Eva is the first person to learn Valeri's secret. She also constantly teases Valeri about her and Eleanora's little escapades.

Valeri's adoptive mother. An older woman who needs a cane to walk; Valeri was unofficially adopted by her, and the woman slowly warmed up to her as she helped around the house. She gave Valeri the flute that she plays - a flute with magical properties.
- Has a birthmark on her left collarbone; it looks a little bit like a butterfly, or a flower.
- The scar on her chest is always a bright red; it covers most of her chest, and she has had it since ten years old. It seems to have grown with her. Sometimes, she gets pains so bad that she passes out - the scar flares hot, its color an ominous black.
- She wears a mask over one eye when she performs; it used to be a full mask, but it got broken in a scuffle, and she's just stuck with it.
