Lyra is the princess of the night side of Dreamland. She is albino so her skin is completly pale.

Since she is the princess of the night she sleeps during the day. The job of being the princess of dreamland is to look over and help those having nightmares. Realilisticly one person can't help everyone at once, so as soon as a person dreams for the first time a Dreameater is born. The dreameater monitors and protects the person dreaming. If they feel they can't protect them, they will wake the person up.

It's not possable to see a dreameater in a dream since you are seeing the dream from their perspective, this is why you sometimes see yourself in the 3rd person.
