Story
Harvest
The gems on the volcanic island decided that they wanted some excitement in their lives, and a prominent activity they'd do is hold bonfires. They had sulfur, which burns blue, and grass, which burns orange, but they were getting bored. The gem medic had an idea, and grew all sorts of soluble crystals in a pond and experimented with which ones gave cool results. They found that copper sulfate burns green.
The others were excited by this and so they all grew the blue crystals for green flames at parties for special occasions. Sometime along the way, these crystals obtained inclusions and self awareness. For many years, their crystals were harvested and burned, regrown, harvested, burned.
Escape
One time, the gems stopped maintaining the pond where Chalcanthite was growing. And so, slowly, they grew. And then they escaped. They stole an eyeball so they could see, and they ran out into the fields.
They leave a trail of death wherever they go and they're not only toxic to organic life but to other gems too. They don't listen to anyone and have attacked several of the gems who live on the island.
And then...
I'm gonna be honest, I haven't thought that far.
